WindowBlinds 4.6 Task Bar and Start Menu not skinning after years

Monday, March 24, 2008 by Darco | Discussion: WindowBlinds

Hi,

It's me again.

After reloading WindowBlinds 4.6  the task bar and start menu are not skinning no matter what skin I use.

It was working fine for years and then it just stopped skinning them.  It skins everything else in Windows Explorer and it skins everything on top.  In the display properties it is skinned all around.  After entering this problem in the search box on top, I found some one who had the same problem and posted a picture, but he was using WB 6.  I will try to post the picture of his, because it looks exactly like mine. I hope someone can help. I hope this picture comes out all right because there is no preview box.

Can you post your WB System Info.
The second screenshot doesn't look like WB 4.6

Darco sorry can't be of much help. Only thing I'd be able to think of is if you accidently marked the checkbox in WB config to use a certain taskbar and start menu at all times.

Zubaz,

I do not have that option to post my WB System information in 4.6 I already looked. That must have come out in a later model. I do not use the Stardock Browser because it took up too much space off of my monitor. I would rather just come to WinCustomize to look around.

That picture is of someone else's problem that I found in the search at the top of the page. But that is exactly how mine is skinning. That is a version 6 and mine is version 4.6.

I have not updated because I am self taught and when I first downloaded WindowBlinds, I had a lot of trouble that Ian Black helped me fix. Since then it has worked fine for me. It is not a matter of money because I have bought other products like Desktop X, Icon packager, Orion Icons, and have subscribed for the last 6 years. It was my way of showing my appreciation for all the fun I had here.
When something is working, I am happy and leave it alone. When I have to upgrade any product, I panic.

zakai1369,
I already checked that and I didn't check to use another start menu or taskbar.

Thanks guys. I figured whatever they did to help that person in the picture might be my problem also.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

In your response #1 above you show the Windowblind configuration dialog.....if you read the tabs across the top one of them says "SYSTEM INFO" click on that tab and copy/paste the information into a replay.

Heh . . I made the same mistake.

The OP found an image with a similar problem and posted that.

Getting community support for a version as "old" as 4.6 is going to be hard.

Lantec,

That picture above is not my computer, I found that picture on Google search, That is Philippe's computer (whoever he is). He is using WB 6. I only used that picture because that is exactly how mine looks. I looked again and there are no tabs on the top of my 4.6 WindowBlinds. I clicked on everything and it's just not there.

In the last 6 years I went from WB3 to WB4 then to 4.6 and every time I updated something went wrong, so when 4.6 was working that is where I stayed.

Sorry.

I should've finished reading your post...

I'd go thru the basics.....
Make sure you're using the latest drivers for your video card.
Check for other "customization" software that may be conflicting.
Look at any "new" programs installed since you last had it running correctly. Especially any that added something to your Startup folder.

If you are using the latest... sometimes a roll back is needed

@ Darco

I had the exact same problem when i started working with WB. And it was also 4.xx Dont remember anymore. First i thought it was my hardware, drivers, etc.
But in the end i found out that it was actually a check option in WB. As it is some time ago i really dont know anymore where to uncheck/check the option. But it is somewhere in WB. And it was a little bit tricky to find out.

I think it was under override settings. And there are some options like : Override Taskbar, Startmenu etc. Like default or skin, etc. Look around there and try some settings.

0cRz0,

I think you are talking about "user overrides" XP Overrides, always use the XP taskbar in----that is not checked, it says Disable XP style taskbar.

"always use the shell style defined in" is not checked either, it says "Always use Blue Shellstyle".

I thought it might be because we had Nod32 3.0 updated, which we had been using for a year with no problem, but my Daughter said it started before that.

There have been no new programs or driver updates or anything put on in the last year. We changed ISP providers from Adelphia to Comcast but it was working after that for months.

Thanks for trying to help everyone, you might be hearing from me if I have to update to 6 and mess it up.

Thanking all of you for your trouble.

0cRz0,

If I put a check in both boxes then it will always use the XP Task Bar in one and in the other if it is checked it will always use Blue Shellstyle. That is the way I interpreted it.

Does anyone know if that should be checked of not checked.

always use means just that - you check them and WB will use whatever is designated in the dropdown

however a 'check' 'apply' to see if it does as it should at that point... then if so.. 'uncheck' 'apply' = won't hurt to see.

Have you had any Windows Updates?

with so much of a computer system being intertwined... it's conceivable to me you might need to see if there are updated graphics drivers for you

This was what I thought was the default settings, I usually don't change the settings except don't put on the skins wallpaper.

I'll try it and see.

Thanks,

Thats exactly the reason why your startmenu looks like Win98/2000. Because XP is not enabled. So first enable XP and Blue Shell Style. And than go to the dropdown menu and change it to either a skin u like. or there should be "use current skin" or sth like that.
So enable the XP button. Because the startmenus u would like to see, are all based on the XP skin.

As Bichur said a click to try wont hurt. I think you should be more couragous. Specially when you do stuff like that and want to customize. And with changing WB settings, its not like you rescript your Win Registry manually, of stuff like that. All of those changes are just one click away to get them to old one. And if you really wanna be safe. Make a image. And than change as much as you like. The recovery will be only one click away. hehe

When you still have a subscription, i would recommend to upgrade. Im pretty sure, when you know how to use WB 4.6 you wont have problems with WB 6. The interface is much clearer and easier. Specially for people who are not so fancy with modding.

Wha Hooowwww!

You guys rock. That was the problem in reverse. I went into overrides and XP overrides was checked in both boxes, so I unchecked them and applied a new WB and wholla. There it was all skinned.

Thank all of you so much for helping me, I couldn't have done it without you because most of that stuff in the settings, I don't understand.

You will have to give me some time to get over this traumatic event before I go on to WB 6.

Can you go from 4.6 to 6 for 20.00, meaning skipping 5, also do I put in in Windows Classic and uninstall in the control panel. Then download and buy WB 6 and install?

Thanks again all of you, you were great to stick with me when I was ready to give up. Now that I know that it works again maybe I will not be afraid to try WB6 when I get over this.

I would also like to update Desktop X to the latest from Desktop X 3.0 and will probably need some guidance.

Your the greatest,

going from 4 to 6 (or 4 to 5, 5 to 6) - yes need to uninstall and reboot prior to installing 6

not sure about where to uninstall if it's a stand a lone download, but yes, you want to set WB to use a windows default skin, then unload WB, then uninstall

I think you get it for around 15 as a past customer

I use SDC to uninstall, install, update, etc

with SDC I have the options of 4, 5 or 6

Yep. Just uninstall. Reboot. And install the new version. Dont worry about skipping WB 5. You could directly install WB10 . If its out.

Uninstall: First unload your skin. Or load Windows XP default skin. Than use control panel, or the WB uninstaller, or a uninstaller software (when u have one).

SDC (stardock control center) will also work when you just buy single versions. And are not a object desktop subscriber. Might wanna try it. It makes the whole download install uninstall pretty convenient.

cheers
