Weekly Poll: Should We Even Bother With New Galleries?

Last week's poll was a surprise.  People actually voted against the idea of a brand new gallery on the site, and when I've talked about other new galleries in the past the general response seems to either be "meh" or "no" so it raises a question in my mind.  Does the community on the whole want the site to expand in its coverage to cover new types of skinning? 

With the advancement of cell phones, PDAs, and web-based applications, the world of skinning has grown drastically past the world of Windows applications.  Now you have skinnable phones, web apps like WordPress & phpBB that have incredibly complex theme and plugin systems.

So this week's question is "Should WinCustomize Add More Galleries?"  It's a simple yes/no question like last week's.

I think that artist and users can focus on "their" skinnables" if they want (and even only display what they want on the WC sidebar) but there is no good reason to prevent other users from their "skinnables".  The more artists and users we have at WC the better it is for all of us.

Recently I've been exposed in the forums to DesktopSidebar a very cool app.  How many users may have missed those forum posts and don't know about it?  Better have it added to the WC gallery and allow users to opt-out if they don't want it.

[That is NOT a request for DesktopSidebar Zoomba!  Put down the banhammer!]

WC's focus on Stardock apps is a good thing but there are many skinnable apps that do not compete and could really add new life to the joint.

I voted for the cellphone skins. I think more galleries would be a plus for skinners and WC.

I also voted to add the cellphone support. Since the pocket blinds gallery is dead, I vote you change the description and use it for cellphones.

I would like to see somewhere for every and all skinnables to be 'hosted', even if abandonware.

I dread the day some of those sites which do still have these rarities go under....and skinning's heritage is lost forever.

Like it or not, such proggies as kJofol and Sonique [to name but two] are part of our history. Eg., if it weren't for kJofol Winamp would likely still be somewhere like v2.9x [not freeform].

So what if they all just sit there gathering dust?  They won't eat much...

I too think the more stuff we host, the more folks we will get visiting the site, who possibly will become contributors, artists,subscribers,etc.

I think some confused Hosting the stuff, with actually building the applications etc for it. This thinking my have tainted the actual results of the last poll.


IMO any growth that brings new members to WC cant be all that bad.

First...Keep Expanding. Maybe the majority consensus is just not ready for Cell Customization gallery at this point. I hear other things being hollered for...so maybe some day right?

Second...I concur with Jafo. Sure, we are moving along, changing, evolving. But lets not forget where and how it all started. All those 'Skinnables' back in the day put alot of artists on the map today.

I just think if we move to cellphones, etc it is going into a market not really served by the site, but gets away from its core reason for being. Some of the current areas do not get enough attention as it is, either with submissions or being properly organized (some have stated OD is poorly done for example). I guess I don't have really have interest in this are as well, but still feel we would get too far away from the core of Wincustomize. Will you have Cellcustomize then?

I voted no, but really, I don't care. I just come here for a few specific categories, and that's all. Which brings up a suggestion. I love that I can "edit" my gallery choices, so I don't have the long list of skins out there that are available to me. Since I don't use more than half of them, it's a nice feature. What I'd like to see, if possible, is a way to save that "list", since I'm a subscriber, and whenever I login on another machine (I view Wincustomize at work, at home, and on my laptop...I love you guys so much!), that list would automatically show up and I wouldn't have to go in and uncheck 75% of the boxes. It's a suggestion. Take it for what it is.

Just because something is done in a manner you don't agree with doesn't mean it's "messed up".

Maybe not from "your" standpoint! Thats the whole point of commenting on something thats messed up....because its messed up! Learn to walk in someone else's shoes before you make comments like that.

Discussion about new content does not mean that "older" sections are discarded.

When it comes to site changes, adding a new gallery for a new product is considerably easier than reorganizing an existing gallery with all of its content.  In the short term, I could add a cell theme gallery and grow the site, community and skin gallery. 

If I wanted to go in and fundamentally change how a gallery is organized or presented, I need a lot of time, at least one dedicated developer, someone to help with a new UI for the gallery, and then going through the database to move data around.

My current inability to affect large site changes should not preclude me from making simple ones.

I voted yes for mobile phones. I think there are already enough galleries to customize a computer as a whole. Adding a few would be nice but the site must not get flodded with galleries of different softwares which work similarly. If a software is there which includes skinning of something new then it should be added otherwise no.

And ya one more thing...
Changing this blue "Vote Now" button would be nice. Gets my vote.

If someone wants to make a better "Vote Now" button for me, I'd be more than happy to use it    Since adding the button, voting has taken a significant jump.
