Weekly Poll: Forum Updates

Pretty and useful, or worst thing ever posted to the intartubez?

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 by Zoomba | Discussion: WinCustomize News

Over the weekend we rolled out a pretty big upgrade to the infrastructure that powers our forums and articles system across the entire Stardock network.  To go along with this we put out some layout and code fixes for the forums to hopefully make them easier to use/read and faster to load.

After ironing out the major kinks yesterday (speed issues, broken images, quote issues etc) we're starting down the road of restoring the list of temporarily lost features.  So we feel we're in a good position at the moment to start getting your reaction to the changes, specifically the visual changes.

So this week's poll we'd like to hear whether you like or hate the changes.  And please leave any comments you have on the changes on this thread.  We're going to be taking all feedback into consideration for improvements as we continue to work on the site.

IT really looks good.  Once the bugs get ironed out and teh missing pieces get implemented all will be well with (the Wincustomize forum) world.

I like it. Sorry, love is reserved for FOOD!

Like all changes, folks will just have to use the forums and try out everything. Once we find everything, and the little corrections take place, what's not to like.

I'm at a disadvantage, I don't go around to a lot of other forums, so therefore I don't have much to compare to, and for me, it's not the most important part of this site.    Sorry, don't mean to offened anyone.

You need to give us a week to use it before running a pole like this. All the stuff that doesn't work is bound to skew the results. I would give it a month, fix all of the issues, and re run this pole. I guarantee you'll get totally different results.   All of my text runs together...how do you create a line break? Also, after you edit a post and then try to edit it again, the first edit is no longer there.

Zubaz, I am using IE6. i used to just hit enter and I would space down to the next line. Now I can hit enter 10 time and get to the middle of the box and as soon as I post it runs the text together. Maybe if I try this
it will. Figured it out...it's not adding the < br >
The editing of edited post problem is still there.

I have noticed the same with the line break, but I will live with it. It looks better, but nw the gallery doesn't match.

I did but I can not see any post in that thread higher than the one numbered # 75 on the 3rd page. I click on the last page arrow and that is the last post showing. My post is not visible and the thread says there is 126 posts, but I can only see 100 of them, page 0-3 are the only ones I get.
In other words, the post for problems has problems itself.
EDIT: Go figure...that threads working now.

Images used as links in posts no longer do that 'jumping' thing when passed over with cursor. A very welcome improvement.

Waiting for all the bugs to be worked out. It is faster. Used to go to a thread and it automatically went to the last page, not it goes to first. WC Logo at top of page still not taking me to home page, just refreshes the forum page. Edits aren't working for me, yet. No honorary titles? Why the separate box for the avatar? Stats maybe? Any chance we are going to be able to use animated avatars? Or formats other than jpg? HArd to blend when you don't know if you'll post will have a white or blue backgound. lol. Petty, I know. Not sure if I like the little 'on-line' thingy. The format for 'Article' threads seems the same. Will that be changing?

Po...

  1. Some features are temporarily disabled.  See the initial post about the maintenance work for the full set.  Honorifics are on there.
  2. The old "take me to the last post I read" bit was a hack and a source for problems previously.  We're looking into how to better implement that feature.
  3. What do you mean "edits aren't working"?  Errors?  Does it take a while for the edit to appear?
  4. The separate box for the avatar was to improve readability of the forums, and give us more flexibility in formatting.  It gives us room for moderator badges, and additional user information.
  5. No.  No animated avatars.  Ever.  Period.
  6. We're looking into additional file formats for avatars (pngs?)  For blending, would adding a border around the avatar help?
  7. The formatting update was only to the forums.  Any changes to article views will come much later because it will require a big update to the main WinCustomize project.

You can. Above the post, right side there is a box labeled tools. Click it and there is an edit choice.

The problem that I see with the edits is, if you edit a post, then edit it again, the first edit's text is gone.

When I click on edit, it opens the post for me to edit. When I click on save changes, it goes back to the first page of the thread and does not apply my edit.

I just checked the 'edit' thing again to see if it was still doing what I said...and it is.

Also..when I try to input an image...not ALL the time...when I click on the image icon, the screen jumps to the top of the page and the window that pops up to put in the image url will appear above the top an half hidden off the page.

Petty stuff, I know. Just letting you know.

Thanks for the responses Zoomba.
Nice to know you are keeping up with all the comments.

I owe you and andrew (and whoever else is involved [but not all the Stardockians!]) a drink next time I'm up there.
