Skin Naming

How do you name your skin?

Wednesday, January 30, 2008 by TheMasterBaron | Discussion: Community

I've been doing some dreams for awhile now, and just started doing some fractal animation. While working on these I struggled to come up with names. Some skinners come up with cool abstract names for there skins, while others, like me, come up with names that resemble there skin (or think it resembles it).

So, I was wondering, how do you name your skin?

I used to name them dumb names like SLZ1 (Slim Line Zoomer 1) Now I have a list of cool names. That's all the info you're gonna get...

A good way to go about it is to find a word that describes your work and then look for synonyms or literary references. An online dictionary or thesaurus can be very helpful.

I often have an inspiration for a name, or I think of a word, and play with it, or add an extra word to it, until I think it sounds pretty kick asss.....everyone is different too,
I have always tried my best to use a name that no one on this earth would use or even think about.....but ive been wrong on one occasion......

also at the end of the day, its how YOU like the name, and how you feel about it...

Being mainly a 'porter' the naming process is pointless to me, but the few I've done from scratch were all named prior to beginning them.
(Have to check for doublicates, in my lill collection of 54,000 skins first though )

I usually reference a thesaurus, dictionary, or encyclopedia if I have a basic idea to start with. I often look at space and science web sites and scan for words or prefixes or suffixes that are interesting. I tend to make a list of them and see what I can mash together or alter to make a decent name. Once I settle on something, I open up Stardock Central and search the WC galleries to see if anyone else has already used it.

On naming skins, often I will start off with a name that seems appropriate for the design.

Although the name will sometimes change part way through the process.

whatever you name it, always add a version number behind it, example: Kick Ass skin v1.0, I'm telling you that version # just adds that something special to every name

(- it makes me feel special anyways),

I'd love to do a frosted flakes wb skin and call it Frosted Flakes v1.0

- that would be so kick ass, that cat's pajamas even (that would be a cool name too, cat's pajamas v1.0!)
