What are the best programs for creating wallpapers and whatnot?

Hey, I am new to photoshop and wondering what programs I should be using to create wallpapers etc. Any suggestions, i know some of you pros out there could help me..

yeah but i dont see how you get all the amazing detail? just mess around with pen tool? is there special tools?

Great walls can be created in MS Paint if teh idea is there and teh time is taken.
