Looks like I might need a bit of help

I have a very curious problem. It seems I can not use the Windows Update service. Everytime I try use Windows Update either express or custom one of two things happen.
One of the things that happens is that it tries to update but then gives me the error "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
The other thing that happens is that after I choose Express or Custom the scroll bar keeps scrolling for hours.
I have tried using Windows Update without a firewall. I've tried it without a virus scanner. I get the same results.
I thought I may have a virus but according to avast, Norton, Kapersky and Trend Micro I'm clean.
I then thought I may have some foul spyware installed. Ad Aware will not work correctly. It will do half of a scan then give an error. Spybot says I'm clean.
So I'm stuck. Any ideas?
Maybe my HDD is going out who knows...

try getting rid of IE7 go back to IE6 then try it u can uninstall IE7 from add and remove
i know IE7 does that allot if that works then u had corrupt IE7
