Graphics card advice needed

Friday, December 28, 2007 by Fuzzy Logic | Discussion: Personal Computing

I have an Asus A8n SLi, with two 7600GTs attached. I've been aware from the start that some older games just don't like SLi.

Performance is reasonable on newer games like Unreal Tournament 3, but could be a lot better. I run it at 1024x768 and framerates are a bit on the low side. Its playable...

So I was thinking of removing the two 7600s and replacing with a single 8800GTS. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Are there better options (not too costly)?

Currently running nVidia driver version 7.15.11.6925 on Vista.

This has probably sealed it for me:-

That's pretty much what I was told by the owner of my fav puter store... the performance increase is certainly not worth more than twice the price.

Had I not gone with the 8600GT to be able to afford a top end soundcard as well, I would have bought the nVidia GT myself.

Fuzzy:

The 8800 GT 512mb would be the only choice for you if you're going to be playing in resolutions of 1280 x 1024 or less. If you're planning on playing at anything higher than yes the 8800 GTS is the way to go. However, not the old G90 chipset you'll need to buy the new G92 chipset, which is the 8800 GTS 512mb card not the 640/320 mb card. This card will get you the GTX performance without hitting the bank to hard.

Anyway, IMO I would get the new 8800 GTS 512, unless you can wait till February/March when the 9 series is due out.

Here's my personaly recommendation. EVGA has outstanding support.

Interesting. Can you link me the source of this. I've decided not to purchase the new G92 series because of this article along with some EVGA mod's/techs on their forums saying the same thing.

But if feb isn't true than it might just be worth getting now and then using EVGA's step-up program...*loves EVGA*
