Ah! Grasshopper.....

Thursday, December 20, 2007 by Leo the Lion | Discussion: Wallpapers

Last week it was 'scared of spiders' but this week it's Grasshoppers. Those friendly little guys who live in the grass. Here's an amazing 'mechanical' Grasshopper designed by Shikijiyu over at DA. I'm sure you will agree it is a stunning masterpiece   Link to pic below but hit the download button if you want to view it in large detail. Incredible detail.

And a Merry Xmas from Spiderman and me

no sense in beating ur self up leo.. I too didn't think of the alternate aspects of it until it was pointed out..That and not always is it easy to guess what the rules would be until it is brought up.. such as it has been here... We live and learn..

To share is great and much appreciated. a small thumb offering up a direct link to the skin in question, or a screen shot you made using the skin, can showcase the skin as well as keep within the sites guidelines for distribution.

There's a fundamental difference between posting a graphic as a link [datamine] from another site and uploading a screenshot image here [or elsewhere] of someone else's unobscured wall/image.

The former happens all the time.... the issue of 'redistribution' does not necessarily apply as the image is not hosted/uploaded here but is sourced from the site where the owner/artist uploaded it.

With the screenshot example a third party is uploading the image here which if unobscured [partly] can be argued as actual redistribution of the artist's image outside of the artist's control.

The basic difference is that if the artist of the image shown here were to remove it from the source [Deviantart.com] then the link/image here also disappears...so his rights are intact.  This does not happen with an uploaded screenshot, hence the difference...

All that sounds a tad convoluted....the 'real drama' only applies if you download the artist's image from his source...and then reupload it elsewhere....here or image shack, etc...and thus actually physically 'redistribute' ...

I was referring to a obscured SS as not to violate the sites policy, thus offering the Wall im a used form and showcasing the image being complimented by other skins.. etc.. I no way meant to just up a SS of the full image...I should have been more clear i guess...

Thanks Jafo for your explanation. I understand and concur. Thanks HG_E too, it's good to know that I have not been the only one to transgress.

I stumbled on this by accident when I saw a reference to a robotic grasshopper image I made a while back. While the arguments presented are totally right on - I am nonetheless MASSIVELY flattered to see my work posted with accompanying praise.

There are certainly artists who would be opposed to having their work posted up in such a way (instead of linking to the original source), I just happen to not be one of them. A safe bet would be to just drop an email and ask. In this case I would have happily answered, "Awesome!"

PS - Glad you liked it Leo the Lion.

Shikijiyu ....as site administrators we have to assume the author would be 'opposed', and thus could only know to the contrary if/when there was that email notification aka consent from the artist.....

Thanks for your comments, Shikijiyu.

You are a great artist and your work is fantastic and we'd love to see you put up some of your work on this website. Whilst Wincustomize is a skinning site - and without doubt the worlds leading website in this sector of art - some of us, in fact, I would guess the vast majority of us here, are all lovers of art too and that Grasshopper image makes a great wallpaper. Thanks again for your kind comments and I am truly glad you were not offended by my 'over enthusiasm'
