A reasonable price? HP Pavilion dv9074cl

My mom's co-worker and her husband are wanting to sell a laptop they have and I'm quite interested in it. It's still in the box, they had gotten two of them as a his and hers deal and decided they only needed the one, so now they're trying to sell it. I'm not sure exactly when they got it or how much they paid for it.
It's a dv9074cl entertainment notebook, and the full specs can be seen [here].
The problem is the asking price...they're saying $1000, which is quite crazy for a laptop that is well over a year old and is running an older version of Windows (Media Center instead of Vista which is the new standard, and that's perfectly fine with me). I'm really impressed with the specs but I'm trying to talk them down to a more reasonable offer (they're nuts if they think they're gonna get the full $1000 on eBay, let alone the security of a guaranteed payment). I've given them the arguments I just mentioned, but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
I've been having a hard time finding much info on it since it is an older model, but I've asked around and I'm getting numbers ranging from $650 to no more than $850. I'm also throwing in other stuff to barter with, in addition to offering cash.
I'm trying to find more convincing info I can throw at them to justify lowering the price, but am having trouble doing so. Help and advice would be appreciated.

HP usually has an extra partition set aside which will contain your "recovery" software. In fact I don't know if you'll receive ANY System CDs with the laptop. Their "crap" can be a bit hard to get rid of. It'll be pre-installed with software for every printer and camera in their arsenal.

All that preloaded crap is going out the airlock, normally I just build my own machine so I won't have any of that crap on there, but a bit difficult to do with a laptop.
HP usually has an extra partition set aside which will contain your "recovery" software. In fact I don't know if you'll receive ANY System CDs with the laptop. Their "crap" can be a bit hard to get rid of. It'll be pre-installed with software for every printer and camera in their arsenal.

I have this laptop but with a Core 2 Duo T7200 and the 1680x1050 17" screen and absolutely love it. I have had it for 14 months and it still plays every game I have tried on it. Even Hellgate London, which has a pretty inefficient engine, runs on it pretty smoothly though I did have to kick down the graphiccs settings a little.
Having said that I wouldn't be surprises if you could find a new DV9000 series for about $800 of so on Christmas sale. I thnik $1000 used is too much.

Yeah, I'd be doing the same thing, given so many pre-builds come with uglyware that does more harm than good... but I thought I'd mention it cos me mate Walt thought he was getting a good deal on upgrading the Office 2003 trial was bundled with his HP. It said it was discounted/so much cheaper than anywhere retail... then he saw how much they hit his credit card... could have purchased Office Professional 2003 from any PC store for what the Academic version ended up costing him.
