A reasonable price? HP Pavilion dv9074cl

My mom's co-worker and her husband are wanting to sell a laptop they have and I'm quite interested in it. It's still in the box, they had gotten two of them as a his and hers deal and decided they only needed the one, so now they're trying to sell it. I'm not sure exactly when they got it or how much they paid for it.
It's a dv9074cl entertainment notebook, and the full specs can be seen [here].
The problem is the asking price...they're saying $1000, which is quite crazy for a laptop that is well over a year old and is running an older version of Windows (Media Center instead of Vista which is the new standard, and that's perfectly fine with me). I'm really impressed with the specs but I'm trying to talk them down to a more reasonable offer (they're nuts if they think they're gonna get the full $1000 on eBay, let alone the security of a guaranteed payment). I've given them the arguments I just mentioned, but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
I've been having a hard time finding much info on it since it is an older model, but I've asked around and I'm getting numbers ranging from $650 to no more than $850. I'm also throwing in other stuff to barter with, in addition to offering cash.
I'm trying to find more convincing info I can throw at them to justify lowering the price, but am having trouble doing so. Help and advice would be appreciated.

They'll be lucky to get half of the $1000 on eBay.
IMO your offer of $650 is more than fair. After all you're saving them the time of posting & managing the auction plus shipping etc.
Non-use or low use doesn't necessarily equal a higher value with computers. I'm also thinking that you can depreciate a computer over 2 or 3 years under GAAP. So, you could figure that into your calculations also.
Then again I'm a hard ass when it comes to negotiating pricing on anything.

No actually I haven't made any offer yet (I typed up my arguments asking for a reduced price, and made my bartering offer with stuff I have). I'm just trying to figure out a more reasonable amount to offer them (once I hear back), because $1000 is just ridiculous. I'm really new with laptops (only time I've even messed with one is my friend's that she just got) and as for negotiating for something like this...well first time I've done that as well.

The CPU was introduced in spring of 2006 so the notebook COULD be that old but more likely early 2007. The L2 cache is a drawback and HP's tendency toward bloatware is another. HP's tend to suffer from slow thru-put on things like multi-card readers and CD/DVDs I couldn't find FSB info listed either. It's comparable with the first generation Intel Core 2 Duos. Media Center is a decent XP version but $1000 is steep even tho it's not used. I'd consider it for $600 and might go as high as $750 if the warranty is still good.

Like I said...still in the box, unopened. And I figure it has to be from 2006 because it includes Norton 2006 crapware (which I will sooo be getting rid of). A 15.4" laptop I was looking at was almost $900, so if I can get this 17" for a few hundred less....I'd call it a win.
On a side note...I really hate this policy of not being able to edit when someone replies after you...argh!

This is a pretty nice cpu. The 200gig harddrive and the 256 vid card caught my eye. You don't see that in too many laptops. Lucky You

You'll notice that you will be on the laptop more then your desktpo. With a wireless you could sit on your couch watch TV. I go out in the backyard and sit in my chair. The neighbors either side of me have wireless routers. So if my router goes down I use their's. It's Great.

And to think....I just spent $800 upgrading this machine, and $550 on the monitor, and now off planning to get a lappy. 
Man I'm such a geek with all my toys...gotta have 'em all! And yep I have wireless, and so does my uncle so I'll be bringing it down there a lot to show off.

August I paid $400 of a 22in monitor this weekend I went out and bought a 24in.Yes it is an expensive hobby

The Vid Card might not handle Vista very well if your intending to upgrade in the future. .

The video card caught my eye in the specs. So many Laps have intergrated graphics but this one has a nice little 7600. Good Luck, Bebi I hope you get it coz it sounds like you've got your heart set on it

BTW, Bebi, in case you consider it, be sure to check the version and purchase details for the trial edition of Office 2003 that HP includes in the bundled software... a friend went that way and ended up paying almost twice the price to an available equivalent at most software retailers.

I won't need it starkers. All that preloaded crap is going out the airlock, normally I just build my own machine so I won't have any of that crap on there, but a bit difficult to do with a laptop.

Well XP is getting old. I'm sick of messing around in Linux land. If SP1 comes out soon I might buy a Vista upgrade. I've tried Vista and after all the things I've said about it I like the way it works. However I don't like the fact that it takes a machine I can't afford to run it.

Dude, guys...let's not hijack my thread, kthxbye (such is the way of progress btw, gotta have the goods to get the bells and whistles).
BTW NT, the HP specs said it is fully Vista Home Premium compatible with the Aero experience. I'm not planning on putting Vista on there anyway. If/when I upgrade to Vista, it will be on my main machine.

Have a look around get some specs, and prices then go back to them.
Ebay is a good place to look for low prices
