fonts making tab and toolbar button distort

ive solved this problem before by finding a post about it here in the forums, but of course i cant find it now to save myself.
For some reason when i apply font to my tab button, it distorts it. same with toolbarbutton. If i remember correctly, the best way to solve this was delete all the preset fonts and reinstall them. do i also delete installed fonts, and fonts from my skin, and reinstall the whole lot? also, do i install the fonts first before i apply the settings to individual buttons, or is it the other way around?
im pretty agro at myself for not knowing this by now.......
