We're running out of memory

Wired Magazine ran this story/article on last Friday, Your Outboard Brain Knows All

We're running out of memory. I don't mean computer memory. That stuff's half-price at Costco these days. No, I'm talking about human memory, stored by the gray matter inside our heads. According to recent research, we're remembering fewer and fewer basic facts these days.

I'm an old fart but had to agree, can't even remember my own cell phone. I usually say, "Well, I don't call myself" Duh.

Got me to thinking, why not come up with some questions to quiz your friends. Half should be history (things they should of learned or pickup before computers and such) then ask them peoples phone numbers, birthdays (things that we use the computer and cell phones for now). Since adults have more time alive then computers have been around, ask you children similiar questions and compare results.

Here's something to think about, will all are knowledge wind up in a computer? If so, if one day say your childs cell phone doesn't work, can they find the library without GPS?

Why PRAY, there's man/woman made medications for that now.....

....failing that icicle sticks will suffice when the pharmacy's closed.

So, to the original topic, I'm guessing that due to the way things are taught in school these days, the memory is not being filled with basic facts, never mind anything we forgot.

I ask my wife what the nine planets are, and she can't name them. Of course, that was before Pluto got demoted.

Never mind the planets, then, can she remember other basic elementary school facts? Probably not. But I can. And she can tell me what all the celebrities have named their babies, so there you go.

Pluto's still a planet! Silly academic types can change a name but not what's up there in space. "The world is flat, and we can prove it!"

Running out of memory?! We're running out of air!

I can prove the world is flat.

Simply place a round object on the ground. Does it roll? No! See, the Earth is flat.

Geometry makes the rocks in my head clash harder....never had a mind for that subject at school 40 years or so ago, and I've since forgotten everything I never knew,so it's gonna hurt even more now.
