We're running out of memory

Sunday, October 7, 2007 by Philly0381 | Discussion: Personal Computing

Wired Magazine ran this story/article on last Friday, Your Outboard Brain Knows All

We're running out of memory. I don't mean computer memory. That stuff's half-price at Costco these days. No, I'm talking about human memory, stored by the gray matter inside our heads. According to recent research, we're remembering fewer and fewer basic facts these days.

I'm an old fart but had to agree, can't even remember my own cell phone. I usually say, "Well, I don't call myself" Duh.

Got me to thinking, why not come up with some questions to quiz your friends. Half should be history (things they should of learned or pickup before computers and such) then ask them peoples phone numbers, birthdays (things that we use the computer and cell phones for now). Since adults have more time alive then computers have been around, ask you children similiar questions and compare results.

Here's something to think about, will all are knowledge wind up in a computer? If so, if one day say your childs cell phone doesn't work, can they find the library without GPS?

I didn't know that I'd forgotten I didn't know them....which is only half as bad as forgetting what I didn't know I already forgotten.

I never have to tie my shoe laces. Either the shoes don't have laces or they slip on without being tied. I guess it's true I won't be able to teach my children how to tie their shoes.

I have a 'young' brother-in-law that was head-hunted during the Y2K 'panic' as he was skilled in several 'older' proggy languages....was also 'IT Guy' with a big banking Co [NAB, I think] .....yet I remember he did NOT know how to read an analog clock-face.....

Just in case.....'analog' clock faces....they are the ones where 'the big hand is on the...and the little hand is on the....' ....

If we weren't before, we certainly are now....cos of you I now forget to remember I'd forgotten I didn't remember I'd forgotten I didn't remember not to forget.

I guess it's true I won't be able to teach my children how to tie their
shoes.

My kids have grown and have kids of their own....I'm guessing they won't be able to teach their kids what I wasn't able to teach them - whatever that was.

.they are the ones where 'the big hand is on the...and the little hand is on the....' .

On the what? What is the big hand and the ??? ...um...er, little hand on?

I can cope with losing my memory as long as my drive doesn't fail me completely.

Darn, I had to go back to the top of the article 4 times and read some of the replies about 3 times because I kept forgetting what the topic was about and what reply I had read last before going back up. Damn........ Now I have to read the article again to know what to type.
