How about rating ?
Thursday, September 27, 2007 by pat805 | Discussion: Community
I was sometimes surprised about the rating in skins, particularly in WP and screenshots sections. I noticed that sometimes the rating was more in connection with the author than in relation my real appreciation of work. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would like to know if other people has this same impression...
Maybe the reason is that my ratings are completely out of reality or I have no artistic judgement.
I want precise that I'm absolutely not speaking about my screenshots ratings.
Thanks for giving your opinion.

Some people only rate their friends. Some only rate their enemies.
Some people rate for art. Some people rate for effort. Some rate based on artist growth.
Some people only rate one gallery. Some rate many.
If you think that a specific user is rating you out of context, PM a moderator to look into it.
The power of being part of a community is that it all balances out in the end.

My remark was really not concerning my poor screenshots... But I noticed that when a "master" uploaded sometimes it was generally 5 stars (most of time perfectly justified) but this way of doing make ratings loosing their objectivity... (sorry for my english but it's not my language...) And I noticed that also in the WP section...
Also i didn't know that people have "ennemies" here. I will be member soon 1 month and I only met nice people and fantastic artists. Thank you.

And keep uploading skins.

This is why ratings and downloads DON'T matter.
Here is a trend I have noticed.
A new skinner uploads something and will get maybe an extra star from some as encouragement. After a couple of skins, if their work hasn't grown, the ratings on their stuff drops. The Author starts to blame others for their faults. Embarrassment ensues....
I won't name names because they don't want to rehash it, but I could name 3 Highly qualified and respected Skinners that did exactly as I described above. Add me to that list.
I can't stress enough just how much fun skinning is when you don't care about ratings and downloads. They are a part of all the fun, not something to set your emotions to. If it sounds like I am talking to you from a higher level, I am sorry you feel that way but with any luck you will someday come to realize that your skinning stats won't be what is written on your tombstone.

If you want to know what really counts it is the comments. After you've been here a while you'll start to learn people. You'll know who's comments don't count and who's do. If you are honest with yourself you'll build relationships with those commentors and seek out the ones who proved the best feedback [Please note that the best feedback is not always good feedback].
I'm lucky because I'm not a serious skinner**. I'm a user of skins and a helpful-enough guy. What I upload and the comments I get are, for the most, part all in fun.
Skinning can be very serious. It can be your career. In the end though, it should bring you some joy. Why else do it?
* I use Vad_M's wicked-cool skin checker to watch my stuff. Very Cool; check it out.
