I have just recently been asked about pricing for one of my skins to be used in a commercial product. However, as I have never done this before, the pricing is a spot where I am not sure where to go.
I would be greatful for some input in this area from someone who is experienced in this area.

That is what I was thinking but am not sure what some standard rates are.

I have similar experience as what you having now. About a year ago a company approached me for my Whitetube WB to be used as part of their commercial product. Still the rate we agree upon are on hourly rate. .. just a few mod here and there like color tone adjustment and their company logo on some of WB components.. So all in all it still depends on how much can both parties agree upon. Not too high because they can just look for other on their list and not too low for it would not be fair for you either..

Hey, you say 5 grand is low, can you break down what the 5 grand covers if a company were to approach you for a similar skinning project. This is an interesting topic.
Just an example, How many hours do you put in a master skin that could be used a corporate desktop skin? Are there any other considerations / extra charges/costs to take into account in this type of a project?

Placing a price on your work for any type of corp./business use has it's ups and downs. Being you need to have them make you an offer. [Which is the best way to find out things?!] Then when they do,you can go over what the offer is worth to you. Having them ask you what you want is the ole-boy routine of getting you to do what they want easily. [Cheap!] Make sure you get all the facts in writing and have the offer made the same way - "This is what they are offering you!" not what you want to figure you are worth. But what they figure you are worth to them using your work for their product.
Good luck and work with it more before you completely decide!

You can't price your work based on what income it will generate for your customer unless of course they are selling your work. If it's being used as a component, etc, etc. then it's going to be worth a set value.
Kind of agree with vStyler...I'm not a WB Skinner but, if you say 100 hours at $50/hr or 200 hours at $25/hr then you get the gist. Personally, I'd go into the meeting with two numbers what you want to get and what you're willing to settle for.
Y rate can be the tricky one to determine IMO.

I usually use X hours at Y rate to figure out how much a skin should cost.
Y rate can be the tricky one to determine IMO.

100 hours honestly, for a high quality, original, 100% complete skin, then add a vista version is also low.
Then take into account the years of making nothing.. its no different than going to college to learn a skill \ trade. What does an average college graduate make for a 2 month chunk of intensive work?
I, personally have invested my entire future in this as well as sacrificed my past/ and I wont settle for peanuts.. under any circumstances.

I think the best thing to do is what RomanDA does. Both a free usually feature limited version with a link to the full pay version. It obviously works since Stardock and numerous other developers do it this way.
Some suggestions would be to add export functions (xls/spreadsheet, csv, html/css,ics??) into the advanced version.
You may get better answers on that specific question through the forum at DesktopGadgets but, you really won't know until you upload it.

Thanks a lot Sir you have cleared almost all confusions of mine but the worst thing is that I can't sell the gadget with my own name until I get 18.

Whether you want to surrender protective right over it is another matter. That would need some legal mumbo jumbo.
