Hi thanks for the reply, im using 64 bit vista ultimate. I went and found and installed the vista codec package, but this alone seems to not allow avi playback in media center. are there other tools i must use to do this? can you give me or direct me to a tutorial?

Not perfect of course, what is, but it has helped me out a lot over the years where the commercial ones could not. Worth a try, its free, so you will not loose anything by trying it. Its the "phpBB" equivelent of the media player world.

Sure you would have. But glad to help Ive run into it it several systems I don't know why they don't include more codecs in media center to begin with. They are always being added to but they should at least include all popular video formats!
Well if you need anything else let me know!

WWW Codecs link
Media center will play avi but first you have down load the codec packets you need.I
install home theater systems alot are PC based and this is common for media center. You don,t have to use the link I sent you but it should work and will steer you in the right direction .There are different ones if you are running Vista.
*Note:this is not convertion software ,this give your PC this info it needs to watch an avi. file!If I can be of any more assistance let me know!
