WindowBlinds 6 Beta Feedback

Wednesday, August 1, 2007 by Neil Banfield | Discussion: Stardock Support General

Please post all feedback about the WindowBlinds 6 beta on this thread.

Note that the beta is for 32 bit XP and Vista systems only.  Please do not post about it not working on 64 bit XP/Vista.  Please continue to use WB 5.51 on those platforms.

This beta is for Object Desktop customers ONLY.  Standalone WindowBlinds 5 owners will not be able to activate this build.

Please note that you must have Stardock Central 2.46 Build 154 or later to install the WindowBlinds 6 betas. If you try and use older versions, it'll eventually timeout and give you an error about an invalid URL.

If you have problems with it running at all, please uninstall WB6, reboot and then try reinstalling WB6 again.

I think the location of all this typical of the Vista standards.

I just updated to Windowblinds 6beta 5.92b.090 and have noticed some odd things with the configuration window.

1. unless Im blind no apparent EXIT link/button/etc...
2. when making changes the configuration UI blanks out and the hourglass runs... when I try to exit I get a ghost empty after effect of the dialog bog but the blank dialog box doesnt exit, it does minimize and then when it is restored the UI is back to normal and then I can exit out.

over all I like the latest build but the configuration UI is a bit odd in its behaviour.

You close wbconfig using the normal windows close button in the window titlebar.

When making changes the entire screen should blur and fade to greyscale while the skin is being applied.

Hey Stardock
I just Installed wb6b2 and now I can Not access Window Blinds from the Property Box. Is this a Bug? I can only access it from double clicking the Tray Icon. Can you explain why this is. Thanks

Couple items with todays update.

1. I had to turn off Auto Archive to get the installation to complete.

2. The Windowblinds button in Display Properties worked once and no longer. If I want to open the Configuration dialog I HAVE to use the Systray item menu.

3. ALL my Per Application settings disappeared. I had about 6 apps excluded and none are showing now.

Are the blank dialogs with apps like Outlook 2007 (Rules and Alerts) on Vista fixed yet in this build? This is the same problem that was fixed with the most recent build of 5.5. I have not seen any comment on my earlier posts about this bug returning in WB6. Thanks for your time.

Since updating to the latest build, my window size and location cache is continually being changed. The previous build had no effect on it. When I updated to the latest build, I had to disable archiving to get it to install. Now, I want to go back to the previous build and can't. Any ideas?

Also. Windowblinds is not accessible thru the display properties window.

I have just installed this build: WB6 5.92[b].90 and it crashes winlogon and reboot my machine.

I am running on a on a Window2k3 server (Build 3790.srv03_sp2_gdr.070304-2240 : Service Pack 2). The previous WB6 was working fine for me.

WinXPHome service pack 2-

After looking at the security permissions that came over in the WB folder, I'm wondering if you're trying to get WB6 to install on XP in such a manner that limited users can run the software without the Admin user having to modify the permissions. If so, it's not working, the exe file (and likely others, didn't look at a lot) still comes across without limited user read access.

If you're not trying to deal with the installed permissions then never mind.

2003 server requires special handling and it looks like the file path changes have caused a problem on that OS.

Ever since I got Microsoft Streets and Trips (2005, 2006, 2007), it has refused to work whenever I had WindowBlinds loaded. It said I needed to get more memory. The work-around was to close Windowblinds and live with Windows XP graphics. Then Streets and Trips would work fine.
A couple days ago I went from WB6 5.90 (?) to WB6 5.92[b].090. All of a sudden, I can load both WindowBlinds6 AND MS Street and Trips! I don't know what Stardock did last week, but ... THANKS FOR THE MEMORY!

I think the location of all this typical of the Vista standards. Everything for a user goes there. It makes backup very easy.

I'd expect to see more of it from other apps in the near future, not just Stardock

Someone should let the developers of ObjectDock and Soundpackager know about this; they are putting stuff in My Documents>Stardock

Same here.

Backup is already very easy. And I hate having stuff buried in the fifth or sixth sub-subfolder & having to navigate to it.

I've had to add outlook express to my per application settings since yesterdays update - everytime i clicked an item on the tool bar outlook express would just immeadiately close. I also lost all my per application settings too. Sorry guys I cant do a carriage return for some reason here so this is all one paragraph    Cheers Gilly

silverspider2005: Which OS are you using and what skin?

Regarding missing exclusions, copy wbperapp.ini from the WB dir to the new skins folder.  The file was missed in the migrate.

Well...~! Seems there are some rather interesting problems related not to the program. But to how it has changed is all for everyone else.
Mine here on Vista is improved with better placement. The file rearrangement was of no problem. Special thanks to a thread by Night Train on where to edit the reg.'s to move the files to another location beside my public folder. So just placed them on C:\ and called it good with a bit of group policy for access of other users. [just to be sure of no probs...]
What I would like to see is a code presentation screen for each area being skined as we had with SKS5. That or atleast a button to open the code for the specific area in like note pad. Would save me a ton of time doing edit's with new code not present with the program itself.
So actually as far as that goes the new WB6 update is fine - a very good beta update!
Oh and if any of you had saved to an archive the former version? There would of been no problems with a roll back. If thats what you prefer to do. Myself I'm more into beta testing with no hands tied with everything completely backed down to the last detail. [ You have to think for yourself and stay ahead of any type of change or malfuctions...] so far so good too - more like great~!

Keep up the good work Stardock I'm enjoying every minute of this release year...~!

Oh and here is the latest work for edit with WB6 and SKS6...

OK where is the toggle to turn off loading wb on startup? I cannot find anything with the beta that allows me to disable running at startup/login.

Also I have noticed on occasion that when unloading the beta, when the screen does blur out that the blur holds for almost a full minute. This when I have had the machine quiet and not running any active apps... just idle.

thanks
