When is Stardock Design Going to "WOW" us?

Tired of the same old thing...

Friday, May 18, 2007 by messiah1 | Discussion: OS Customization

I posted this originally as an article but probably should have just stuck it in a forum.

Just a quick question, as the title implies...when? Most of all the premium Suites from SD are the same basic stuff. Not much there, not alot to work with for creating matching docks...same overall design and concept. Isn't WindowBlinds their software...and yet they don't do anything like what some of the better regular skinners are doing. I'm not out to bash, but I'm sure a bunch of people will jump on my case about this...even though I'm entitled to my opinion. So, where's the WOW? Anyone else feel this way, or am I just high and to the right?

As said several times before, I miss the full suites by Pixtudio and Skinplant much (which always had that 'Wow!' factor for me) and for me those were killed by hiring the artists behind Pixtudio and Skinplant. On the other hand, who wants to pay the work going into it nowadays ? Suites those days (even payable) had much enthusiasm gone into them. Most of today's payable suites try to get back in money what has gone into them in terms of work. That's why the cheap ones have so little in them (mostly a WB and very basic Icons with even filetypes missing and 1 or 2 gadgets). I have to really think hard when we last had a fitting winamp skin as part of a suite for example.

For me I want my desktop's AND explorer elements fit each other and I fear I won't find that in payable suites anymore. And I am not interested in american University Suites at all also...

I really liked the Texas Hold 'Em theme. That has a lot of WOW factor, and it's beautifully made!

Sometimes in life you just have to make your own WOW. Sorry for that, thou somehow it did seem appropriate.

Also if we didn't have our own opinions there would be no way to gauge what WOW really is. Think about it.

Oops, almost forgot, happy TGIF.

On the article side of this, in a reply to Lantec, I said the same thing. If you don't have Liquidox, get it! More of the "Premium" themes should follow this example.

One of my absolute favorites from Stardock Design is the Argos suite... so clean and easy on the eye.  I was running it for months as my desktop.

I'm still waiting on "animated glyphs".
That'll open up a whole new world for me when it comes to making skins.
Oh, and still waiting on the first 40 MB windowblind. Hey, if The Skins Factory can do it to WMP....

Yah,tho we still are preparing some premium content...its our intention to have nothing but the best we can get and produce.

Not a lot there yet but give us time.Since nothing goes up that isnt top quality, there will never be a huge amount of content...but,you wont have to go thru a bunch of poor or marginal work to find the good stuff.

Wincustomise is home...Maxstyles will be the trendy club that the supermodels frequent.

Check the WIP section to see whats coming up.(not much there yet either   )

Yes, you're right. Thanks for clearing that up for everyone. Don't know how many people would have thought they WERE neccessary.

Yes. Liquidox was a pretty complete suite. I still hope for Vista-Updates for the old Stardock suites.

What about WC Select? That's a pretty cool skin too. I especially like the little green dude standing on the desktop. Question...seeing in thread for the first time this 'animated glyph' thingy...What is it...if you don't mind my asking.

Truth be told, I hardly understand why suites are needed.

Part of the FUN in customizing is getting all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to fit nicely. Getting them to look more than just skinned- making 'em totally different.

IMHO though not a paying customer (yet), I think Stardock Design should give up the suites' unified (but somehow restricting) look, and go for more streamlined elements and bundle them together (promotions) instead.

Stardock Design 'WOW'd me before ever releasing a skin.

Quality of the critters that makes up 'SD' is 'WOW' enough...
