Last week's poll sure fired up a good discussion: What would make you want to subscribe to WinCustomize? While some of the feedback wasn't in the realm of the possible, like "Make all Master Skins free to subscribers" (We don't own them so we can't do that), a lot of it was both interesting and helpful and will help me when the time comes to draw up subscriber features and benefits for WinCustomize 2008. There will almost definitely be more public discussion on the issue in the coming months, so stay tuned.
Here are the numbers and a pretty picture:
This week's poll is the first of many regarding potential new content and features for the WinCustomize community. As the summer months approach, and the world of skinning slows down as people opt for sunshine and vacations over their PCs, I'm looking for interesting ideas for content, events and activities to keep things interesting on the site as the summer marches on. Today, we're talking about a new sort of podcast.
UnderTheSkin, a podcast originally started by Mormegil and later handed off to community members CerebroJD and DoctorNick, is as close as anyone comes to a skinning podcast. However, it's been a while since the last episode, and I think there might be some value and general interest in this sort of community-run content. Sure it's not a skin, but it can still be interesting to talk to those who do skin, ask questions and get tips and hints.
In the past week, several moderators and I have been playing with a podcast system that will help resolve both the problem of editing time, and a lack of variety in voices and topics many podcast suffer from.
Live Podcasting!
Ok, quit your laughing. We found a service that will allow us to host a live podcast, complete with the ability for users to call-in and be on the show, free of charge. We think it's a potentially fun idea, having mods and skinners on, and having community members call in with questions and comments. The only question remaining is, is anyone else interested? Vote in this week's poll to share your view on the idea. Comments are, as always, welcome.

Is it too early to ask what if any additional software will be required? Can you tell I'm new to Podcasts!!!!
Just a thought, not everyone would be able to listen live (time difference, work, whatever). Would you have a way of tracking when people listened to the podcast? Would you allow people to send in questions? Would the podcasts be subject oriented or general discussion?
I know, just be patient and wait, can any of us to that, especially when something is announced here?

The undertheskin podcast was a joke! Very little content about skinning. Just a lot of excuses why the podcast was not so great because of the busy schedule of the guys doing it. It turned into a wine sesssion about what they were doing in college. I could care less what they are doing.

Just a note, this will NOT be the same crew as PowerUser.tv. PUTV was Brad Wardell, Kristin Hatcher, Joel Hulsey and Derek Batting, and was focused on general tech, gaming news, and whatever misc stuff they thought up at the time. I myself had only one appearance on the show (Ep 51, when due to tech issues, we couldn't get anyone else on the show so I was tossed in for filler). There is the remote possibility that Brad might show up if the live show takes off, but chances are slim. This podcast is going to be much more community-run.
Also, PUTV was a very labor-intensive process. To edit each episode usually took at least a full work day. This show, when we do it will be live, largely unscripted (we may have talking points) and dependent on who calls in and what they want to say. So it's very likely it will wander a bit, and be a bit "rough" as you can't edit out all the "umms" and long pauses from a live show like was done with PUTV often.
And give UTS a break, they've done 15 episodes, don't have the budget for equipment and software to do a lot of editing. I think they deserve credit for sticking it out as long as they have and for putting in the effort despite having very busy life, work and school schedules.

I was trying to point out that if it's a podcast about skinning, I would love to hear it. Being a relative newbe at skinnng I was looking forward to hearing tips, tricks, techniques and reviews of software that could help me learn to skin for myself. But after 3 episodes of UTS, I gave up utilizing it for any usefull information.
Everyone has a busy life. Of the 3 episodes I downloaded, each one had about 25% information and the rest was "fluff". I take my hats off to them for trying but it still lacked enough content to make it worthwile for me. Sorry if my comments upset you.
