Really Cool Wooden Case Mod

Sometimes skinning your OS just isn't enough

Monday, April 23, 2007 by Zoomba | Discussion: WinCustomize News

For the past several years, a fad has been steadily growing among computer enthusiasts with lots of free time, and really expensive tools; case modding.  Normally, your computer case is just some non-descript plastic box that you shove under your desk, or behind your monitor, anywhere to get it out of the way and out of sight.  Well, we here all know that just because something is boring or ugly, doesn't mean it necessarily has to stay that way (Luna... need I say more?), and it turns out that others know that too and have taken to building very complex and beautiful custom computer cases out of all sorts of materials.  I've seen clear cases, cases with coffee pots built into them, cases that are built to look like movie props etc.

Today's really cool case mod is made out of wood.  It's really a two part case mod, the first part to build an inner metal case with a window to house all the elements, then a hand-made wooden frame and casing to sit the computer in.  The case is 100% custom built and inspired by Japanese architecture.  Unlike many other case mods that go over-the-top in what they try to accomplish, this one looks stylish and very sleek.  The sort of thing you'd expect to see at some artistic design firm.

Truly amazing stuff! But his first Mod Sangaku IMHO is even better. It took 300 hours of his spare time in 9 months. Spare time? You mean this is just a hobby? I say Finish school, don't get a job and just make a living doing what you love Brother!!! Wow!

That looks really cool. Computers are really missing out on the design part generally. So much good stuff that can be done.

I made a computer case design for my final major project. loads of fun. http://workshop.thomthom.net/minimediacentre/

That case would be several 'grand'....stripped of all comp components.

Workmanship has its price....

Wow - this guy could easily create a business out of producing these - just stunning!!!

Snowman and whatwhere - the V8 mod you both linked to is also simply excellent.

Now, if only there was a way to do a really cool mod of a laptop

You can't mass produce craftsmanship, just facsimiles thereof.  Oftentimes there is a huge gap between "labor of love" and profitability.
