...can somebody please help me!!!???

Every time I want to change my desktop wallpaper (I go in *my Pictures*) and then all of a sudden my explorer.exe crashes (the mouse shows me some kind of backround activity before the crash) - it disappears for a few seconds and then it starts up again!!

I already closed my widgets, rainy and OD, but it still happens!!!

Does anybody have an idea what is wrong???!!!!

...I am sorry, I have no plan - what do you mean about the *event viewer*, do you mean the *task manager* - if so - yes I checked it, but I can`t see anything wrong with it!!???

start > administrative tools (right hand side of start panel) > event viewer

if you don't have that option, let me know.

right click start > properties
start menu tab > start menu 'customize'
advanced tab > start menu items list = scroll down to the bottom
system administrative tool > dislplay on the all programs menu and the start menu

Ok, to find the event viewer you will need to configure your Start menu panel. Click start then right click on the Start menu panel. Choose customize Start menu and select the advanced tab on the Customize Start Menu panel. You will see a box in the center of this panel showing the Start menu items. Scroll down to the bottom where you will see System Administrative Tools and click the center one to have your System Administrative Tools appear on your Start menu and your All programs menu. Apply the changes and you should see your System Administrative Tools is now available. You will probably have to post the relevant event log info and wait for someone knowledgable to see it. o.k., I finaly found it and my pushed buttom is: "Elements never show".
Do you think that if I chose the: "show all programs" - the Problem would be solved???!! - if not - what should I do next!!??

I have my System Administrative Tools configured to "Display on the All Programs menu and the Start Menu". When you select your Administrative Tools look for the Event Viewer and click it. The crash should be recorded in either the System log or the Application log.
Do you think that if I chose the: "show all programs" - the Problem would be solved???!!


Not yet this is just to see what the Event Log shows.

There is another way to open the event viewer. Left click on start button and then RIGHT click on My Computer and select manage from the drop down menu. Then the Computer Management open will open and there in the System Tools you will find the Event Viewer.

I remember that once explorer.exe constantly crashed every time I opened My Videos folder because of one movie file. After I deleted that file that error stopped happening.

...to find out what wallpaper or picture in my folder that has a bad file is almost impossible, because it happens on any of them, not specially one!!!

If you think its a wallpaper thats doingit...I can't imagine how...but try going to your wallpaper folder Windows/Web/Wallpaper and moving all of them out to another folder except any default XP wallpapers you have and see if it still does it. If it does then its not your wallpaper.

Ok. I've thought on this some more and I think what you are saying is you can navigate to your My Pictures folder but if you click on any of the WP's you've stored there Explorer crashes. More than likely if that's the case them its the MS Image and Fax Viewer that's crashing for some reason. I use the Microsoft Dump Reporting Tool (I think that's the name) to help track the program that crashed. In any case I began to wonder if what's really happening is you have some file registry issues. Do you use a file registry cleaner? If not you should. I use TuneUp Utilities 2006. It's a retail software package. I've heard other people mention CCleaner. It's a freeware package. Using a file registry cleaner and maintenance tool has helped me solve many different system related problems from software not installing correctly to system and software crashes. This kind of software is essential to maintaining a stable functioning PC especially when we are downloading, installing, de-installing, creating and deleting large numbers of files. The file registry becomes a mess without regular maintenance from these activities. So that's my hunch for now. Later.

- bigdogbigfeet - yes I have and I use a registry cleaner almost every day, because I create a lot and delete a lot all the time!!!
But I don`t have a Microsoft Dump Reporting Tool - where can I get this!????

I have never had this issue but one thing I have done which sometimes works when things get crazy is going back to an earlier restore point. Say 3 days ago everything was fine. Go back and restore to then. The only thing you'd lose would be new apps installed. I think it restores the registry that was good at that time. Sometimes it's an easy fix! Worth a try.
