Whuups.... forgot to post the solution - just in case anyone else runs into the same problem:

Yeah, me - it took me ages to make my earlier post with the score, same reason. Did exactly the same as you

Base score 4.2

Athlon 64 3700+ (san diego) @ 2.2GHz => 4.2
2 GB GEIL PC3200 3.4.4.8 Dual Channel=> 5.8
XFX GeForce 7600GT xXx @ 590/1600 => 5.9
Gaming Graphics => 5.2
HD WD ata100 80GB => 4.9

I am using my old ATA100 because I wanted to preserve the XP Pro on my hitachi 160GB SATA300 for safety (in case I hate Vista) , But why is my CPU so low?

Snowman - To get a higher GFX score I always go into Windows Classic and 640x480 screen res. It works

Well, actually I think you were only joking PurrBall, but heck I had to try it out anyways
800X600 was the lowest res I could get, 16 bit colors and Windows Classic bumped up the score a bit:

Curious.. what is the model CPU you are using that is 3.7 GHZ? I didnt think intel had dual core chips above say a 2.7 (or 2.x)?

Cheers

Yeah its an overclocked E6600 core 2 duo

If you go into Advanced and List all modes you can get to 640x480 with 256 color. I also like to change the wallpaper to solid black to minimize impact on RAM..

The Performance Information and Tools control panel breaks at that screen setting but you can still start the assesment and it will show once you set the screen settings back to normal.. Nvidia released WHQL 158.18 drivers today.

Dont laugh at my 2.3. It works for me for now.

And yes my Athlon runs at 1.8Ghz. I can even run some dreams.

Will try the latest Nvidia drivers to see if it helps, but at the mo I get better graphics score with the Vista drivers over Nvidia.

Although unfortunately the drivers currently don't seem to support per pixel alpha blending so Windows FX performance is worse than on the 3 year old laptop I have with a basic Intel chipset which is disappointing. Vista drivers generally for the Nvidia 7950 seem flakey still as the latest ones seem to crash quickly if I use a .dream looping movie, and the older ones (which I'm using now) are the best compromise as the games I've tried haven't been crashing and Windows seems stable too.

The machine is about a month old, but I invested most in the motherboard and peripherals as I'm expecting to upgrade the processor, RAM and graphics card in the next 6 months once the premium prices drop on a few of the options.
