Who's in control, you or your computer?

I haven't posted alot here but when I do I try to keep it somewhat light hearted.
Picture this. I wake up every morning with the sunrise, gather my thoughts and get ready to greet the day. I turn on my computer and once booted up it tells me that I have mail. If my automated updates are working I have to take care of them. Then I have to check other programs like antivirus, spyware, firewalls for updates (especially if I want to go online). All of this before I can even use the computer!
Once a week (unless I've lost some brain cells) I need to run scans with all the programs that I have to protect me from the bad people. Yes only one virus program, but several spyware programs, a couple of registry cleaners, a rootkit program and other programs to clear out cookies and links to where I've been. The you have to check your hard drive to see if it needs to be defraged, almost forgot, need to check for bad sectors on the hard drive. while I'm at it might as well check the memory (you get the picture).
Like the title says, Who's in control! Is technology making us the machines?
So once I'm done with all that I get to use my computer, for what, it already told me if I had mail!
Now back to real life, what are you having the computer do for you? Going to school online, using it to earn a living in the Information Techology world, a learning tool for the children. How about running home automation (taking care of the lights, heating and cooling, home security). Have you turn it to the Multiy Media Center for the Home Theater room? By the way, customizing your computer doesn't count. That's just your computer saying "FEED ME"!
I'm a sports guy, mainly baseball so I have a subsription service that provides me live streaming video of all games during the season. If there is more than one game on that I'm interest in at the same time it let's watch up to six games on one screen. If I still miss a game I can go to the archive file and watch it after its finished (only do that if I don't know the score).
In other words I don't use the computer for much right now. I do have some projects in mind though.

Jafo - I was going to mention that I haven't seen any Stardock folks in this thread, then you visit. I would imagine that when most of the 9 to 5er's leave work they probably don't really want to sit infront of a computer.
What I think is interesting is no one has talked about the almost daily care and feeding and maintenance of a PC or computer takes. You let it get away from you and you're in whole lot of trouble.

It's full time for me. I use a computer at work for the Accounts part of my job. I also do PC support, which means I looks after 7 2k3 servers, xp/98 desktops, laptops and thin clients. So when I'm not doing my own work on a pc, I'm helping someone else with theirs.
Then I get home. Sometimes, I have time for dinner, but mostly the pc is started first so it can run all its routine back-ups. Then I do spyware scans etc. If I'm then not skinning, I'm at WC moderating, or helping other skinners. If I'm lucky, I get to bed before midnight
So here I am on a Saturday afternoon (just after 1 here) having spent all day so far attached to the ball and chain.
This is someone who twice yesterday went for MRI scans on a prolapsed disc and who is not supposed to spend long periods sitting...

Fuzzy Logic - Appreciate you stopping by. The more replyies, the easier it is to appreciate how nice it is to be retired! Some people don't count 28yrs plus in the military as really working and not having the pressure of keeping a civilian job. I'm not sure I could of done it, to many people and personalities to worry about.

I've just gone back through the replies and realized that there is something missing. Did all the females just decide to not hang around the forums? Or is it just this thread that they don't want to have anything to do with?

I have a $200.00 computer at work that runs a $4,000,000.00 Asphalt plant.
At home I have a $3000.00 computer for reading forums.
I have five computers at home and I don't think I spend half the time with security as you do.( At least judging by the way you made it sound.) AVG is running even now, in the background, as I type.
Computers don't run my life, but thy sure do take a lot of my time. Think I'll go fishing.

Well it looks like this thread is slowly coming to an end.

sleepydawg - It is interesting sometimes how we go about doing things as you pointed out with the differences in the computers and what they are used for.
I have always thought that I had crossed the line from normal to insane when it came to security on the computer. My problem is that after a while all these free programs are offered and I just can't stop myself from downloading and using them.
If I listed all the programs I use just to feel safe you would probably laugh.
