WC Poll Time: DesktopX

Monday, March 12, 2007 by Zoomba | Discussion: WinCustomize News

Welcome back to Monday folks, made extra-fun by the time change we here in the US had to go through yesterday (spring forward... blah!).  In an attempt to get some regular content flowing again, I'm going to try and revive the weekly poll.  The current poll, "Have you switched to Windows Vista?"  Was a pretty popular one last week, netting nearly 900 votes!

Here's the breakdown:

No, and I don't plan to 377 42.17%
I have and I'm loving it! 366 40.94%
I have and I'm regretting it. 41 4.95%
Not yet, but I plan to soon 110 12.30%

So right now, it looks like there's an even split between the people who have it and are loving it, and those who are holding off indefinitely.  And only a few of you are absolutely hating your time with the new OS.

As a piece of related information, Windows Vista accounted for roughly 12.75% of our traffic over the time this poll was running.  XP still rules the roost at over 85%

Our next poll is on DesktopX and how you mainly use the product.  We're looking to get a better idea of which aspect of the platform is the most popular, thus helping us direct development efforts in the future.  Are you a widget person, or more into the full desktop replacement themes?  Have you never used DesktopX?  Or is it possible that you've never heard of the application?

Share your opinion on the new weekly poll.

That and the fact that 95% of the themes are 1280x1024 (bastard size) is why I've bypassed it so far.

I also have a bastard. Plus one legitimate.

Moreover I think that it has no analogues in the world!

Have you ever checked out AutoIT? It's a scripting language which allows you to create graphical apps which interact with Windows very nicely (much like DesktopX objects with scripting). They can be compiled into exes to protect the source and to not require the AutoIT runtime be installed (much like DesktopX Pro Widgets/Gadgets). And it's free (unlike DesktopX). http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/

I have but, haven't used it much. It also doesn't compete on par with DesktopX. There's much that can be done with DestopX without any scripting. The average non-scripter would be lost in AutoIt. Sranshaft has built a number of gadgets combining both which sort of interests me.
