Great list Quentin94, thank you

I would like to add

A-squared Free removes reliably: Trojans, Backdoors, Keyloggers, Rootkits, Worms, Bots, Dialers & Spyware, Adware and updates daily

Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE) detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications

SpywareBlaster (FREE) Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
# Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
# Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

jv16 PowerTools is a Software Manager, Startup Manager, Registry Manager, Registry Cleaner, Registry Finder, Registry Find and Replace, Disk Wiper, Privacy Protector & more

xp-AntiSpy (FREE)allows you to disable the Windows authentication, disable all error reporting to Microsoft & quickly disable some unneeded Windows services with a simple click of the button...Warning:
**The Domains www.xp-antispy.de and www.xpantispy.de are neither part of the project xp-AntiSpy
The owner tries to foist a Dialer program on his visitors.
Don't fall for it, and avoid these domains! The correct site is xpantispy.org

MRU-Blaster (FREE) is a program made to do one large task - detect and clean MRU (most recently used) lists on your computer. This program deletes lists not found by any of the above programs

I use all of the above as well as CCleaner, Ad-Aware Personal & AVG antivirus

As a result in 6 years I have never used Microsoft's updates to keep my computer safe except for 1 ....the update to fix the new Time change coming up in March

Hoping more people will add any great programs they use

ps Quentin94 I told you I had many more secrets

Honestly... since the day I went Sp2 and turned on updates.along with some common sense.. I have had zero spyware, adware, virus on my PC....not one.Going on two years now.

Seems to work flawlessly for me and although all the apps listed above are fine apps.. used them all in a previous proverbial life.. I use none of them anymore.

I do use TweakUI for system customizing and tweaking. An MS Powertoy.

MS Powertoy is good as is TweakUI. Use them both and also use Fixit Utilities 4.0. It does everything from defragging the drive and registry to cleaning both. Although not free, my version I got from Kaza.comWWW Link, don't know if it is still there. Only problem is it is a P2P network and file downloads take forever. I don't use it anymore for that reason. Spyware Terminator is good with daily updates. Also yahoo has a toolbar with antispy, thats a good one too. It has already foiled several hijack attempts and blocked two trojans. Best part of it is Spyware Terminator allows you to choose what to allow or not. If you don't want it it won't happen. I still have the installer packages for AV antivirus and Ad-Aware. Thinking of reinstalling them in place of Norton.

Note...for Bitdefender users...you'll need to keep away from Spybot and A squared.....both cause issues....

Unlike Norton, Bitdefender does NOT cause issues with the OS....just a few spyware proggies....

Good luck with that, Norton is an insidious beast. I got rid of it myself and went with AVG Pro.

Very True I would suggest using a registry cleaner like jv16 Powertools to clean any remaining files...It had been included with a new computer & even though it was not activated before uninstalling there were still a # of reg entries jv16 removed.

Testing a program called DriveSentry ..a Firewall for your drives.
DriveSentry is the world’s first provider of firewall software for computer drives. It provides computer users with zero-day protection against malicious threats without the need for software patches or updates. Its patent-pending software gives computer users the ability to control what applications and programs write to their drives, in real-time, preventing damage or corruption to personal files. DriveSentry takes a different approach to conventional security measures that rely on signatures or behavioral analysis of viruses, Trojans and malware to identify malicious threats.
Its a very small program and took just over 5 mins to scan about 22 Gb It automatically listed my installed programs as safe but gave me the option for example to disable Windows Media player writing to the registry. I had used Zone Alarm & this works the same way but a much smaller imprint & no system resources except when newly scanning.
I've installed 2 new programs & I am very pleased so far

WooHoo finally made a proper link About time huh?

Here is another good (FREE) program to have
PC INSPECTOR™ File Recovery 4.x is a data recovery program that supports the FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems.
File Recovery

Also want to add that I have been testing Drive Sentry extensively...installing & uninstalling apps...scanning..changing various settings and am very pleased. It takes a bit to teach it which programs to trust and remember but once set you are not bothered again unless the program does something unusual. It uses about 50% cpu initially when scanning your computer but only 1% after that. It is also easy to use by selecting trust this program in the dropdown box of the popup and then allow & remember. Find the link in the above posts. It has a free 30 day trial...fully usable and is only 29.95 US

I also found the last free version of jv16 PwerTools ...the others listed are trial only at oldversion.com
Version 1.3

You forget X-Setup. A fine registry program to make things faster and change things so that the way explorer looks is different. You can add logo's to Explorer, Internet Explorer and many more..

Also Ad Aware that searching your system for any trojan horse, adaware and other spyware such as dialers and so one..

The free AVG Antivirus is also a good program

And Advanced System Optimizer were you can scan for files that points to nowhere, scan your registry for register engtries that doesn't exist anymore, takes backup of files, registry,..., you can change the way windows is, by adding screens to windows and so on...
