Get Aero in Vista Home Basic
Start Menu > Click in the "Start Search" box > Type in "run" > Click on "Run" under the list of Programs found > Type "regedit" in the text box and click "Open" or press "Enter" key.
When the "Registry Editor" opens up, click and open the following folders:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER" then "Software" then "Microsoft" then "Windows" and then "DWM".
Double click on "Composition" type "1" in the "Value data" field and click on the "OK" button.
Double click on "CompositionPolicy" type "2" in the "Value data" field and click on the "OK" button.
Exit out of the Registry Editor.
Start Menu > Click in the "Start Search" box > Type in "command prompt" > Click on "Command Prompt" under the list of Programs found > type in "net stop uxsms" press the "Enter" key > Wait for it to do its thing, then type in "net start uxsms" press "Enter" key.
Screen may flicker to set it up. Then right-click on your desktop and click on "Personalize" > Click on "Window Color and Appearance". You should be able to handle it from here.

This just enables the settings for Aero. You can simply go back to Aero Basic by selecting it in the schemes or you can reverse the code which is very simple and have the Vista Stardards theme back the way it was. Which I not doing because I like Aero. BTW, this doesn't mess with the basic them. Their are 2 themes in Vista. Vista Standard and Vista Basic. This code enabled Vista Standard to use Aero. It doesn't mess with Vista Basic. Just wanted to clear that up.

Sorry to report that this doesn't work on my tablet PC. Still only have Vista basic. Oh well ...

I've seen posts in other forums about this Basic-to-Aero conversion and they indicate that loading WDDM (Aero) drivers has to be done during this process. Since I'm stuck with a tablet PC that runs the Intel 915 chipset, I'm not going to be able to get Aero drivers. Intel has already indicated that they have no plans to produce any.
So, were you able to do this conversion without loading Aero drivers?
Are you by any chance using the Intel 915 chipset? If so, have you tried going back to Vista Basic -- I know, why would you after Aero, but I'd like to know so that, if this fails, I can at least go back to something. Took me a lot of hacking to get Vista working on this tablet PC and I don't want to have to reinstall from scratch if Aero screws up my machine.
