Just a quick comment about the latest build of WB

Which didn't work for me

Friday, January 19, 2007 by sophiesboy | Discussion: Skinning

I just wanted to post a quick comment about the latest build: 5.49e.026 for the developers.

I had downloaded the build and found that it worked very poorly on my machine. (A dell d8400 w/ XP SP2, 3 GHz Pentium4, 1.5GB Ram.)

Inevitably, when I tried to change a skin, the process would begin, "please wait" would pop up on my screen, and ..... nothing.

After rebooting my machine about 15 times, I restored the 5.00.001 build, which works just fine. I might have misunderstood, but I thought that the new build was good to go for XP-based machines.

I'm not sure that this is the right spot to post this, but I thought the feedback would be useful. While my machine isn't the best, I think it's reasonably good, and this build just didn't work at all.

On the other hand, to whichever programmer thought of including the restore function, many thanks. That function alone was worth the cost of admission.

How about any of the other release versions (non beta) after 5.00.001?

do you have show pre-release unchecked in SDC?

sophiesboy, I have a very similar system as yours..Dell also.

I haven't had any problems at all with the .026 build, but I did with the .025 build.

With so many different brands and configurations of computers, it's really amazing how many PC's these programs DO work right on. And these ARE beta builds, so there will be more problems than the release versions.

And yes, thanks for the archive and restore function.

Sir Bichur,

Your comment made me go back and look. I had never noticed it (mostly because I didn't know what it was), but pre-release was checked in SDC. When I unchecked it, version 5.49e.026 disappeared from the "available" column.

From the restore function I noticed that I had been operating with version 5.00.001. With pre-release turned off, the update version offered was 5.10.009 so I tried stepping up to that from 5.00.001.

Unfortunately, 5.10.009 gave me the same problem as 5.49e.026, a blind would start loading, "please wait" would pop up, and nothing would happen. Interestingly, while WB wouldn't send me back to normal operation, after reboot the skin I was trying to change to would be operational.

But since I have no desire to keep doing manual reboots of my machine every time I change a skin, I have gone back to 5.00.001 and am pondering what to do next.

I seem to be able to do what I want to do using this build, and since I have no intention of moving to Vista anytime soon, it's possible that I will stick with this, and hope that I don't run into a similar problem with updates on any other programs in SDC.

If you have any ideas what may have changed between 5.00.001 and 5.10.009 that may be causing my troubles, I would love to hear them.

In the meantime, thanks for the suggestions.

Don't know... did notice the other day when the wife was unloading WB on her side (running Dreamland I believe) it just hung on 'please wait' after 10 min we had to hit the power button. When she logged back in WB loaded and then we were back to where we were on unloading...stuck again.

Next login - pulled up display properties and switched to XP via the drop down.. took a few min but changed.

Hadn't seen that issue with 5.1.009 or the other betas (I'm running the .026) and I can't remember if it was before or after I updated my nvidia drivers (went from the 91.31 to the 93.71).

Any time it has seemed slow unloading or switching, I seem to think the skin at the time used a lot of clear transparency.

If you open SDC, click once on WB to highlight it - then click history down on the bottom right

kinda long to post here. and I got no idea which of the things changed may possibly be the culprit.

You might consider sending an email to support or put in a ticket to make sure it gets brought to Neil's attention.
