Bashing
Friday, December 29, 2006 by jimmyyy | Discussion: Community
I see examples in about every 5th post i read. But taking my own as an example. since i Mentioned desktopX, when desktopX crashed on me some 2 months ago (which i had been using for over a yr) and when i couldn't fix it, i immediately went to the forum to seek help. After taking the time to create my post explaining in some detail my situation, the only replys i was met with were replys such as
A personal example of my Own mentalness
When i first started posting (15 days ago) about 35% of my work i was uploading was not going through. I began thinking that uploading some things were either taboo, or off limits, or that they would somehow effect some more important person fugitively, well after so many uploads of mine were rejected i started thinking all sorts of crazy things, some i expressed in replys to others or posts. luckily for me and perhaps surprisingly no one made fun of me or called me stupid, paranoid, etc. Well finaly after more surfing i realized i had a place that contained all my uploads, my acc info, and my email which i hadn't used forever, of which the rejection notices were going. So finally i was able to figure out the minor problems that were stoping my submitions from going through. which were mostly multiple thumbs, or preview pics or what not. anyways the point is after not seeing like 35% of my submitions i was thinking some prety far off the mark stuff. Im sure some people who know how uploading works that read my posts or replys, realized i was wrong, but they didnt bash me or make fun of me or a number of other things that i see happening.
So why do i bother with this post, im sure a new person wouldn't want to read it, and im defiantly no one special in my opinion to stardock, im just am tired of seeing people made fun of. Just leave if alone (at worst) if you cant help them.
I also cant help to think if there were more people like Island Dog, Skinhit, seldomseen, and many others, this place would be a more excellent community, perhaps people are uncomfortable with me mentioning names, if so im sorry its just what i see. But thers a handful of people who unfortunately represent stardock that most likely are good people but have developed some habbits wich belittle or make offences wether they know it or not. You dont like being called names or made fun of so why do it, just stop.
so go ahead, take another turn and bash me or make fun of something ive said here, or my behavior, thats a great way to build a community. Who benefits from being told their stupid, even if there are out of place on one issue or all the issues? Nobody. Just leave it alone if nothing else, cant that be done.
Normally it try to ignore these bashing remarks, ive never really been part of a form board, but ive just seen to many people get bashed just cause they didnt understand something or were upset or even when they were right. Perhaps im over reacting, but i dont think so.
So again, I cant begin to understand how the management of stardock allows it (i wish them and you the best), and i strongly feel a company can not stay successful if this behavior becomes the norm. And most would agree, this is currently the best place on the web. Im really not looking for any answers for this post, i just wish there were less people getting bashed because their wrong at the time, misunderstood, or completely unfamiliar with products or for any reason at all.
Hopefully im just walking into to many wrong posts. Im sorry that im sure this isnt the most popular post.

There's no reason to "bash" you, jimmyyy. I understand what you are trying to convey here, but if you could show me some specific examples of where you feel someone was "out of line", I would be interested in taking a look at it. If you don't want to post them here, then feel free to e-mail them to me.
On a side note, I noticed that you were referring to "BUMPING". That is something that happens quite often here, but people do it to "bump" the thread back to the top of the list so it will get attention. It's not meant for someone to "make fun" of someone, it's usually intended to help bring a problem back into the spotlight.
Some of your posts I have been reading I notice people were using emoticons in some of them. Usually here when people post emoticons it's usually in a humorous manner, and not any kind of personal attack.

| I wonder how many other people have been 'BUMPED' because they were wrong, |
are you referring to the actual word *bump*?
B ring
U p
M y
P ost
as Island Dog said - since threads slide down as more post are made or have activity, this causes it to rise to the top to be seen. (It's not nice to frequently bump your own post for attention though, unless it's genuinely sliding off the chart - then you can "bump" it up) - sometime we do it with words, sometimes with animated gifs.

Bring
Up
My
Post
color don't work for me, and opening in word, the webpage preview, the view source to copy/paste is time consuming
the previous was another *bump* using the art of off topic - not as easily identifiable as, and not to be confused, with spam or "i-trolling" (which should never be confused with "I, Trolling".)

| I wonder how many other people have been 'BUMPED' because they were wrong, or so someone could have a laugh at them, or to make them self feel better, or to show there intelligence. And those bumped people could have become perhaps decent, moderate or great advocates in some form. |

What i meant is using not the word bump or any particular world but but the effect of making fun of someone thats posting a concern or issue. I don't have making fun of issues. i just haven't liked some of the things ive seen as ive walked into posts.

Well jimmyyy I once again understand where you are coming from, but it's hard for us to know exactly what you are referring to without examples.

it is true after re-reading that desktopX comment i can understand a little bit more of whats was going on, and so it was not a good example to use.
But look at it, as a new user (to forms) its like there speaking another language. at the time i was completely unfamiliar with any of the lingo they were talking about and referring, it felt like they were playing tag in my post were i was trying to figure out my problem
i didn't expect any feed back regarding my initial post, but im glad to learn a few things here and i appreciate the time you've all spent addressing my concerns.
