What a beautiful launch of the Space Shuttle at night. I snaped a few pictures in the backyard.

Sweden writes history. Christer Fuglesang is the first Swede in space and one of the crew members on Discovery.

They had the launch live on HD Net, which was very impressive.

Hmmmph....so that's who got my seat!! Was all set to go and I gets this urgent telegram: "Don't bother, you've been replaced!"
Turns out he only got my seat cos the NASA chief is a Muppets fan and this guy claimed to be related to the Swedish chef.
Seriously, I hope it's a successful and safe mission, God speed and bless you all on this voyage of Discovery.
And BTW, ID, you lucky bugger....I once saw the Concorde warming up and taking its very first run down the tarmac, but the space shuttle, WOW, and geez I'm jealous.

I live in Toronto, but the parents have a place in Titusville, the small city right on the Indian River across from the space center. Been to many launches just by walking a little ways down the road, a couple of night ones....AWESOME....lights up the sky and reflects off the river. Even got a pass onto a NASA causeway years ago (I don't know if they even do that anymore cuz of security). We were close enough to feel the vibrations in the ground and air, the noise was unbelievable. At first you can see the shuttle rising in silence, then the wall of noise and air pressure hits you like a full speed train passing a couple feet in front of you.

I love the night launches....shuttle or not.
I'm glad they postponed the first attempt because last night was perfect. Before moving to DeLand my wife and I spent our first 15 married years in Osteen. There's almost nothing but swamp between our old house and the Cape. The windows and glassware in the house would vibrate and the noise (sort of a popping noise in a growl) would arrive just as the shuttle got out of site. However, the best way to watch is from your boat in the intracoastal. Careful of the signs though.....they sent a helicopter to escort us out of the "security area" about 10 years ago.
