Attention Mods; Missing Wall????

Tuesday, November 28, 2006 by PoSmedley | Discussion: WinCustomize Site Issues

My latest wall was approved, and shows in 'My Skins' but I can't see it in the wallpaper gallery. http://posmedley.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SkinID=29419&LibID=8&comments=1

I thought maybe it had to do with getting only 4 stars and my not having renewed my subscription and unable to see lower rated stuff...but...I can see my OD icon which also only has 4 stars.

The wall has had zero downloads or comments since it passed moderation. which was sometime early this morning I believe..not to sound concieted, but I usually have at least one dl by now, so I am assuming no one else can see it either.

All galleries were showing all ratings for the last 3 days. But the site has been jiggy so I assumed it was a fallout from them working on it.

Your not crazy skinnit...i had to look twice all weekend cos i kept thinking i was logged in and I hadn't...

We're not trying to make everyone happy with the change to wall moderation.  We're just trying to cut out the extremes a bit.  The problem ultimately comes in when someone submits what they consider to be their absolute artistic masterpiece, and it then gets rejected for some reason.  Wallpapers are the only queue moderated in part based on quality (in addition to technical and legal requirements) so people sometimes get VERY upset over it.

We're trying to achieve two things going forward with WinCustomize:

  1. Make it easy for people to find high-quality content for their PCs
  2. Be more welcoming of new members and artists

We don't want it to be impossible for users to find high-quality wallpapers because they have to slog through dozens of one-button-terragen or MS Paint scribbles.  However, I feel there is still some value to letting people host their art on the site and make it available through their personal pages.  It gives them a public forum to post them, the opportunity for feedback, and the hope is that with some constructive criticism from the community, they'll eventually improve.  Not everyone here started out making stellar work.

Additionally, this policy of "Personal Page Only" is a way to deal more evenly with users of all levels of experience and time-in-community.  This is one step in making WC more welcoming, and hopefully start to debunk some of the more nasty nay-sayers out on other sites.

believe the non-sub threshold is still 4 stars

Hey Zoomba, it should be but rating filters seem to be broken, can see all, in all galleries, when not logged in. As an example, there is a bootskin released yesterday, rating has not been higher than 1 1/2 stars yet has over 1000 downloads, if filters working it would be doing good at 70 or 80 downloads.
I did email T-Man about it and ratings in general, moderation rating seems to be replaced by first user rating instead of being averaged.

OK... would someone please clarify something for me please? I understand the policy for placing walls on someone's personal page, but i just had a wall make it thru moderation with a rating of 2 stars and it went to my personal page. is 2 stars and below what goes to personal pages? IMO i think it should be 1 1/2 stars or below. any clarification would be much appreciated.thanks

I am placing the cut-off for personal-page only items at 5/10 points or 2.5/5 stars.  This is an even split down the middle.

oh and one more question...if and when a wall gets a higher rating from user votes, will it then come off the personal page and enter the gallery?

I would guess it's a 'no'..since it would or may require extra/further moderation...either someone who would have to keep track of these walls or respond to every email they get that a wall has gone up in points...but I am curious as to what the official response is.

P.S. while we're waiting...skinhit, you wanna go rate my wall a little higher, just in case

The ONLY thing I would like to see changed (I can live with what the mods rate my stuff, and all that...even the personal gallery thing) is that a person must comment in order to rate anything.

and as to post #34...what do they do if the rating goes back down...which I have seen on a few of my own things after they have been moderated.

My wife, who has never used art programs before, has been dabbling in making abstract type wallpapers and asked whether or not I'd upload a couple of them on her behalf (as she is not yet a subscriber) to WC - not for downloads or ratings but to seek advice & opinions to help her improve....

Thing is, I know they're unlikely to pass moderation, and being that neither of us has a personal site for them to go to (as yet), that sought after advice/critique isn't gonna happen and she may just give up on the idea entirely after becoming disheartened and/or discouraged through lack of input....

I've actually used a couple of them as backgrounds on my desktop and quite like them ....but that's just one - my opinion and she may think I'm just saying that so I don't have to get my own dinner.

So what's the deal here (given she isn't a subscriber yet) on us having a joint...er, let me rephrase that, shared personal page that I can upload to when logged in. ? Also, would it have to be named starkers@wincustomize dot com or could it be named mr & mrs starkers@wincustomize, being that she can log into Wincustomize but is not yet a subscriber?

We've decided to wait until after our Feb 07 move from Tasmania to Queensland to pay for her WC and ODNT subs....to save the few extra buck we know the removalists (movers, US) will overcharge us. Yup, the cost of moving has almost tripled since I was forced to retire from the profession about 10 years ago....not that personal income/wages have. Talk about inflation....must be related to their trucks having bigger tyres (tires US) and more of 'em than a car....maybe the cost of air went up in line with fuel price rises at the bowser.

****Oi, how about [email protected] 'could' arouse curiosity in the personal site and folks actually seeing these walls? Errr....scrub that!!! Having just looked in the mirror, only the senile and a miniscule minority of desperates would dare to enter....the majority staying away in droves for fear the unimaginable, persistent nightmares and long term therapy/meds. *****
