How do I migrate my existing XP partition to an Virtual PC image?

Saturday, October 21, 2006 by thomassen | Discussion: Personal Computing

I'm now using Vista full time. But I'm not fully ready to completely get rid of my XP partition. I've just started looking in to virtual machines. I got Virtual PC 2007 and VMWare. What I'm wondering is how I can convert an existing partition to a virtual machine?

I think you would need to make an image of it and then install it to the VM image. You might be able to use an iso or just use Ghost or a similar program to make an image.

Right. I'll have a look into that. Can anyone recommend a free image tool? As this is something I'll only do once, most likely, I'm not that keen on shelling out much money.

Coincidence...
VMWare has a product called VMWare converter in beta testing right now.

I don't know if a home user can get it, but it can't hurt to try.
I've used it and it works great.
I've migrated some pretty critical systems with their P2V Assistant product and I have to assume this product will be better still.

Good luck!
