McAfee joins Symantec protesting Vista kernel lockout

The world's two largest security vendors are now in lockstep protesting against what they see as an attempt by Microsoft to shut them out of the Vista security market by leveraging its operating system monopoly. Read the letter by George Samenuk, Chairman and CEO, McAfee, Inc. :
But, the Kaspersky Lab has a different opinion - Microsoft's new operating system Vista will not make it more difficult for anti-virus systems to work, Russian computer security group and potential IPO candidate Kaspersky Lab said on Friday, contradicting rivals, reports Reuters.
Who is right, who is wrong - can't say at this moment. Only can wait and see.

Huh, I was gonna say that....well something pretty close.
Sadly, they'll continue to put it out, despite all the whining about not being given a fair go by MS.| Um, Nod32 is better than all of these products and it already works fine with Vista, so I think that Norton and McAfee need to...gasp...hire programmers to improve their products. |
Avast also works well in Vista, as does CA eTrust EZ Antivirus. Seems to me, this is another case of sour grapes and trying to paint MS' picture blacker than it really is ....if other security developers can create working AV proggies for Vista, McAfee and Symantec should also be able to do so. Furthermore, if these 3rd party AV programs are working perfectly well in Vista, then it dispells McAfee's claim that MS is deliberately shutting out 3rd party developers and shows them for what they really are....a pack of fear merchants who seek symathy votes through crying foul.
If they can't stand the heat......

I had to help a guy the other day who couldn't get his ISP to work with McCaffee... at all. The second he connected... BSoD. Went online and found more people complaining.
McAffee at first accused them all of being software pirates, and that the dll causing the exception was from a 'Piracy' program (really just Daemon Tools). Later, they admitted it was really their .dll , and for some reason didn't immediately release the patch, instead emailed it to people who complained on their message board.
He spent a week offline before he called me, and spent three more days thereafter. When I told him there was a fix in the works but they hadn't released it yet, he asked me what I used. I told him avast, and now he uses that after paying a year's subscription with McAfee.
MS has seen these people make money off of what is essentially their mistakes. They leave an exploitable hole, and people like McAffee clean up. Why should they? Their software is bloated to the point of being malware itself, slowing down the computers it runs on abysmally. Reality has just caught up to them.

It does now. At first I could not get AVG to install. Apperantly there was an issue in Vista B2, but has been resolved and AVG runs like a charm.
If you are having trouble installing AVG, head to Windows Update.

Nope. It's planned for version 3, and version 2.7 will be Vista compatible. In the meantime try one of those:
