Vista RC2 Coming This Friday
Only 1400 bugs to go....
Tuesday, October 3, 2006 by Zoomba | Discussion: WinCustomize News
Think that RC1 wasn't even close to ready for release? Well, turns out that contrary to previous Microsoft statements, there will be a second full Release Candidate made available for testing. Vista RC2 will be made available to testers this coming Friday. This will be numbered build 5743, staying within the 5700 range, reserved for the eventual RTM copy.
Reports from Microsoft say that the current bug count in RC1 is down to 1400 bugs, but they have to hit 500 or lower before the final build can be packaged and sent to manufacturing.

| Do most people install the Vista Beta/RC's over top of their WinXP OS, or on a partition/secondary drive? |
I still run XP Pro as my primary OS, with XP Home set up for gaming on a seconary drive, and Vista RC1 installed on a third drive.
I've heard of people installing Vista over XP as their main OS, but given that MS advises Vista is still in development, purely for evaluation purposes and should NOT be used as a primary OS, it's not something I would do. However, I've found Vista RC1 to be quite stable and a big improvement on beta 2, with better driver support and more of my hardware/programs working.
The only real issue I have is the print/imaging software for my HP 1210 all-in-one does not install correctly, though Vista has recognised the hardware okay and is perfectly usable via its function buttons. It would be nice if HP and MS have been able to resolve the software issue in RC2, but if not it's no biggie as I can reboot into XP if I need to access the print/imaging programs.

| One positive aspect of Vista coming out will be MAYBE the ridiculous amount of Vista walls, skins, themes, icons and other general garbage may subside. |
Ah...that double positive = negative....
"Yeah, right"...

| my desktop still has no video ( ati is not making drivers for lower than radeon 9600s ) and my audigy 2 only has sound in the front 2 channels. |
Don't understand why you've no video, wife's machine has a RadeOn 9550 256mb card and it runs the Vista desktop with Aero just fine with the most recent drivers....wonder if it could be monitor driver related?
As for your Audigy 2, Creative posted a notice stating it would receive Vista support in the nearish future, so hopefully you'll have surround sound soon. I have an Audigy 4 but don't have your problem as I run directly from the digital output to a Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5600 proccessor/amp. I thought it had grunt with the 5.1 speakers that came with it, but I recenty connected up my hi.fi's surround speakers and now it really kicks butt....unfortunately, suburban life and potential visits from the police deter me from really cranking it up.
