McAfee SiteAdvisor in Wincustomize.com

giving it a Yellow....

Saturday, September 9, 2006 by Lotherius | Discussion: Community

I just discovered an interesting website review and evaluation site provided by McAfee. Of course the first thing I do is plug in Stardock.com to see how it rates. Green - no problems. However, it connects Stardock to WinCustomize (as it should do), and clicking on WinCustomize, I see they rate it a "yellow" site, not green.

Looking at the comments, apparently people are claiming that WC has popunders, popups, and even browser hijacks!

Let's get some people over there to fill in more good reviews!

Btw, I filled out an initial review for TotalGaming.net as well, since it had no data in the system. It will be analyzed by the Site Advisor soon.

Based on the fact the site advisor only found 9 downloads, I'm guess he/she is one of those that show up wanting to know how to install a screenshot.

Well the site advisor report on downloads appears to be automated, whereas the reviews are done by community members.... I'm not quite sure what the reviewer saw. I think what happens on the automated review is it downloads the first 9 files it finds, whatever they are, and scans them for problems.

I wonder if those 9 were on the main page when 'reviewed'?

I love the part about it will change your computer - what do they think a skins site is for?

Hi, I've been using McAfee SiteAdvisor extension for Firefox for a few months now..Simply keeps you alert to possiable trouble sites...but here are the results from McAfee for wincustomize.....kinda funny

1 yellow download

In our tests, some downloads on this site tried to change some of our system settings.

Xbox 360 Desktop (Xbox_360_Desktop.exe)
Weather Alarm Clock 1.2.3 (WeatherAlarmClock12Setup.exe)
ari.zip
OSX_Cursors_CURXP.zip
OSX_Cursors_WINXP.zip
OSX_Panther_Icons_PNG.zip
OSX_Perfect_WINFX_Shadows.zip
Weather Alarm Clock 1.2.3 (WeatherAlarmClock12Setup.zip)
Winstep Xtreme (xtreme.zip)

What the heck did they think these were meant to do?

For anyone interested/curious...the whole idea of GUI enhancements is to alter system settings/defaults, so naturally the proggies, etc will raise 'flags'.

It's a desired result, not a drama at all.

Pity such sites/systems as McAfee can't distinguish/differentiate between expected/wanted change vs. subterfuge and 'evil'....
