Evolutionary Jump Required. Please?

Friday, July 28, 2006 by echo50 | Discussion: WindowBlinds

Please allow me to beg your pardon BEFORE stating my point. I am just a user of widowblinds. I couldn't begin to make one to save my life!
My point is this...I've been monitoring Windowblinds for nearly three years. It is time for an "evolutionary jump!" I feel Windowblind themes are becoming stale and so much alike. Something EXCEPTIONALLY different would be appreciated by me.
Again,my apologies for speaking out of turn. You are the talent. I am not.
Anyone can get me here to voice your opinions. I am not without reason.
Thanks...Echo 21

I believe there is only so much you can do concerning WindowBlinds. However, when adding Desktop themes to the mix, the variety available is incredible and extremely diverse. Couple that with WindowBlinds and you can get a desktop that is not only functional, but versatile and beautiful, and unique to the individual user.

It is difficult to come up with new ideas, everything I think of has already been done. Suggestions as to the next step always welcome!

The true 'evolutionary jump' would be going from user to skinner.

Bichur, you are absolutely right and this is a laudable goal. Unfortunately, some of us don't have the talent. I for one can do all the coding necessary to make a skin, but I have zero talent when it comes to designing a skin. I just don't have that inate artistic talent that is required. I suppose that is why I hold all of the contributors here in such high esteem, for they can create something that I can only envy and appreciate. Fortunately, through this site, I am able to use and enjoy these incredible works of art and support the designers and StarDock.

Bichur...

Did I offend you with my request for an Evolutionary Jump in Windowblinds?
If I could go from user to skinner,I would do so in a flash! I have the artistic abilities. But lack the technical knowhow to write the codes. Time for learning
that is an impossibilty as well. Perhaps a collaboration?
Anyway...If I did offend you, please accept my apology. My hope was more towards inspiring you,and all the other talents, that help make Wincustomize the excellent
site it is.

Sincerely, ECHO 50

Hey echo50, you don't need to know how to write the code, that is what SkinStudio is for, just need to learn how to use it and how images need to be made to work properly.

i feel that there is an "evolution" on the windowblinds themes.., here are some good examples:

G-POD by~Gabriel: https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=4303&LibID=1">Link
G-Pod was the first skin that i have seen with smooth animations on many details like title bars and start menu button.

Darker Theme by~JJ Ying: [link="https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=5248&LibID=1"]https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=5248&LibID=1">Link
Darker Theme with one of the first skins that start using that glow effect on the buttons(maybe isn't so amazing now, but last year was a something great).

Eminence by~rjsmith2007: [link="https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=5758&LibID=1&comments=1"]https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=5758&LibID=1&comments=1
Eminence is for me the best aero skin i have ever seen(...eerrm, well.., i haven't try it yet).

Maybe on the futur we can see some new effects on the aero skins like a zoom effect on the glass.., or whatever, the thing is that almost all skinners try to follow a style on making skins.., i don't know why...

Perhaps because whatever the current trend is (right now being Aero) is popular, and therefore gathers lots of views/comments/downloads etc.

As for the topic, I have had a few ideas for skins that I have never seen before, but when I try to create a skin, all goes well until I attempt transparency... then it all goes downhill, I give up, and delete the skin .

A few ideas I have had (some I don't know if they are possible) are:

1. Broken skin. Have a normal skin (Aero if you so choose) and break it ! Make the images look like they are torn or cracked (for glass), and have computer wires and chips pertruding. Perhaps some animated mouseover sparks on the start menu. But the challenge would be making it look good, while having it not overly packed full of details.

2. A start button on the right. Is that even possible with windowblinds? I know you can tweak XP (with another program) to move it over to the right, so the option is at least on the system .

3. How about a skin with everything actually completed ? I don't download a whole lot of skins, but MikeB is the only person I an think of that skins EVERYTHING possible.

4. 3D windows. Give the impression of a cube type window. Sure we have shadows that add to the "3D" effect, but its still flat. Add some angles in there and make it look new. This would be awesome.

I'd love to see some a new "revolution" of skins. Something new and exciting.

I.R. Braniac's skins are fresh. He rides the line between form and function and does it very well. Boxxi stretches the limtiations quite often.

How can you make such a statement when you admit to not having the facts? Lots of skinners skin everything. LOTS!

You should be ashamed for judging a skin based on a screenshot tycus.

What the non-skinners don't get is that Windows has rules that a skinner must abide by to have a skin function in any useful way. If you push those limitations too far, the skin becomes ugly and disfunctional.

Nope. Just an observation.
And no, I haven't made that jump yet. I got's no artistic talent for creating.
