bootskin causes error on reboot

Friday, July 21, 2006 by rustysam | Discussion: BootSkin

When I reboot my computer, I get a blue screen with an error message and a lot of instructions on what to do.  I have to reboot in safe mode and then uninstall bootskin. This has happened with several versions of bootskin. I would like to reinstall bootskin, as I think it is a cool program.  Any suggestions?
I use windows XP home edition on a Dell computer.

if you have tried the three versions and none work, you fall into a special catagory: the screwed.    Sorry Sam.

Yesterday, I was feeling brave and downloaded version 1.05a again and it seems to be working this time.

No.

It doesn't work for everyone due to different BIOS

Some proprietary systems won't allow bootskin to 'function'. If none of the versions work then you're essentially 'stuck' with the MS boot, sadly...

It's not a fault of Stardock that Proprietary Computer manufacturers like to alter their BIOS to only work THEIR way....

This may sound like a dumb question, but is boot loader still running when the windows screen comes up? I keep getting kicked back to reboot when trying to run bootskins. My system has a Biostar K8M800-M7A MB with a Phoenix Awardbios. I thought the problem was in Windows Defender, so I uninstalled it, but still have the problem. Any ideas?

From what I've been reading, I gather that StyleXP is going in a patching your kernel. I get the impression Bootskin doesn't do it that way.

Have you tried all 3 versions of Bootskin?
If so, you're basically SOL as for as using Bootskin goes unless you can figure out how to change your BIOS.

I'm having a problem with Bootskins not loading, but the problem appears to be in XP and not the BIOS. I receive the following message:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop errors creen restart your
computer. ....

Check any new software that you may have installed .....

Technical Information:

*** STOP : 0x0000000A (0x80605288 0x00000002 0x00000008 0x80605288)

Does anyone have any ideas??

Thanks.

Boot in safe mode
Install Bootskin and set to the XP default.

Sorry - the problem i was having was unrelated (i hope) to bootskin - it turns out it was caused by an install of a program earlier in the day.

got the same thing after i experimented with an ini file by giving the ProgressBarX a negative value (ProgressBarX = -22). strangely, since then SAFE MODE doesn't work anymore leaving me to attempt making the necessary changes MANUALLY while my HD is temporarily in another computer.
EXACTLY WHICH files DOES bootskin change or create if it DOESN'T edit the kernel?
(haven't been able to work on my computer since then, so, HELP!)

are there any more ideas/solutions to this problem coz' i'm experiencing the same. my story is this i clean install my windows xp pro sp2 and install bootskin and objectdock first then i restarted my pc about 4 to 5x without any error. but after i install my nod32 and spyware doctor the problem occurs. maybe this has to do with it? i hope stardock will look onto this. and please don't make this thread stop coz' there maybe others who have this kind of problem too. anyone got any bright ideas? solutions maybe? thanks.

The issue with XP Bootskin is basically been covered by all the people posting about the BIOS. I am afraid this was the primary reason it is no longer developed. There has been some talk about bringing the program back for Vista but this isn't confirmed by the Devs. yet.

I apologize for the trouble you are having but honestly it really is per hardware that issues are had and there isn't a fix coming down the pipeline for the free software anymore. If the version you're currently using does not work for you and you've tried reinstalling, please try one of the other versions available at http://bootskin.com

Cheers
