How do I get visitors to my website?

Monday, July 10, 2006 by Andy02369 | Discussion: Internet

Well the title says it all. I tried to submit it to a lot of search engines and have looked to see if it was put in, but one day it was there, then the next it wasn't. My website is [link="http://www.andybswebsite.com"]http://www.andybswebsite.com">Link just in case you're wondering. I don't like the idea of spamming. How did Wincustomize or even better, how did Stardock get the word out about it's website?

Nudity on the internet? You, sir, must be living in a fantasy land.

Er, back to the topic.

What people want to see is content. You can have a flashy webpage with things zooming in and out, but if there is nothing to hold the audience's attention, you won't do well. I see you have some tutorials, but they are a dime a dozen on the 'net. Just keep experimenting with your content, and the overall layout. Try to offer something you can't get anywhere else.

I'm working on the tutorials, right now is basically the submit to search engines stage. Now if I could think of some other things to put on there, anybody have any ideas? Yeah I don't think I'm even allowed to post topless waitresses on my website. I don't want to have the government knocking on my door or have my website banned.

Search engines like Google look on your website for content. If you don't have much, or it's the same as a million other pages, you won't get good results. And make sure you have descriptive meta tags.

As for other content, it's your decision. You can try to put more tutorials on, but make some that are better (in some way) than the millions of other tutorial websites. (Don't ask me how to make it better, as if I knew I'd do it myself. )

Don't go over the top on the design side either. There are plenty of nice flash designed sites but, the average user is not impressed by this. Content is king. Maybe reviews, a blog.

Try a google search on search engine optimization (SEO). Recipricol links but, don't become a link wh@re. I've read somewhere recently that the average user ignores the right column due to the abuse of ad's in the past but, survey's can be flawed.

Controversy....always works.

Claim you have the nails from Jesus's crucifiction...

Or....that you were the Roman who strung him up....

Or that you knew the bloke who knew the bloke who was on the Grassy Knoll...

That you are the lost Gates/Jobs love-child....

Be inventive...

Thanks for all the tips. What I thought about doing is making is a personal site and helping site at the same time, but I have to figure out a better and much more organized way to do that. Yes I know I did too much on the design. I'll try to put more content on there than working on the design. I think because I was limited on the bandwidth and space before that I didn't want to put too much that would make the site really slow, so I only worked on the design. We'll see what I come up with, you will be surprised on the ideas I get.

Shameless promotion often does the trick.

Otherwise the obvious... either do something new or do it better than those who've done it before you. Which takes some doing.

I'd say the word you're looking for is PROMOTION ! promote your web site and they will come. Stickers, bumper stickers, t-shirts (all printable cheaply with an inkjet and the right paper). Search engines need huge amounts of money thrown at them to help start local and let word of mouth start you, forwarded emails also another way but they can also foster bad feeling.

In the case of your website I'd say adding some interesting content would certainly help and fonts that are kinder on the eye!

I try not to make anything smaller than the default font, I thought about adding something on all pages to be able to change the font like on Poweruser's website, http://www.poweruser.tv/, but I don't know if that will happen. Like I said, I've stopped working on it for a while to see what ideas I come up with. I have came up with some, but I need to find a way to make it all work.

I am one of the Admin team for a great Aussie site called http://www.fairbloodydinkum.com/ In my totally unbiased opinion, I consider us to be one of the best forums on the web.

We have been asking ourselves the same question recently re how to encourage new members. We are already working on some of the above ideas. ( Not the topless waitress or actress ones I must add ).

The topics we cover range from the serious issues such as prisoners on death row to the latest developments in science, world & local news, medical & health issues right down to pets, jokes & your Mums favorite recipes. In other words, something for everyone.

I'd really love everyone to come & have a look at us & if you like what you see, join us.

I'm really impressed With what I see on this site too. The mods & Admins are doing a fab job. Keep up the good work.
