How to create metal mesh effect

I was wondering does any one know how to create metal meshes like the one called Perforated by micky200, here is the link.

I really want to learn how to create this effect, and if possible how to create it in corel draw or macromedia fireworks, or ps2, also what would be the name of such a technique so that I can do more searching on this topic.
