Gimp problem

When I load Gimp it stops at "Loading Fonts" Gimp stops responding, and then it takes a year to load. after it loads it works fine.
this happened after i install a font.
does anyone know how to fix it.

How many fonts do you have installed? If you have a lot, it not only slows down the loading of certain programs, but Windows itself. Try a font manager like Extensis Suitcase.

Yep, this is totally dependant on how many fonts you have installed. If you have a lot, it will bog down. If there are no changes to those fonts, it will scan faster after that, but every time you install a new font, it will have to rescan them all, causing the slowdown.
The solution is to minimize.

Hmmm, since it's come up...what is a font manager exactly? What does it do? I googled 'font manager' and got a zillion results.
Do they all allow for faster OS and app load times somehow. Do they de-activate fonts until needed? What functions do I look for in a font manager?
I have a *large* font collection and a font manager sounds like the ticket. I'm not talking about an app which simply shows you all your fonts. Sounds like there is some other kind of functionality out there.

I use GIMP also. Windows XP Pro. I'd check out the font manager mentioned above. If you have a low-end processor, GIMP chokes up a little. If you have a low-end GPU, same deal. Make sure you have plenty of memory. I usually shut down a few larger processes before playing with the GIMP, runs well for me. I am running 2.2.10 version on an AMD/nVidia asus board. Warning: If you are using SkinStudio and GIMP, shut down GIMP before applying a skin, processor usage goes to 100% for about half hour.

Not being a Gimp user I may be out of line here, but I do know that adding lots of font to windows is never a good idea. I just checked my font collection folder (1.3 gig) and I use a lot of them all the time with out slowing down anything. Most I know use decorative fonts for graphic applications. To use a font that is not installed in windows simply open the font file itself (.ttf) and minimize it to the taskbar, open the graphic program and when you wish to use that font it will show in the programs font menu. This works with Corel draw, Adobe CS, Photo Impact, Paint Shop Pro, but I don’t know about gimp as I have never used it. I also included a link for a great little free font manager.

Did you try running fc-cache? (Assuming a Linux OS)
