Since skinning began there has been issues with copyrights...and 'rips' as they're termed.
On each and every occasion that a public thread has been posted 'outing' the situation/incident varying degrees of flame and accusation has ensued.
Each time, an admin [on whatever site] has requested that the details are better managed via private email, and only once as much information has been gathered as salient.
Nothing has changed.....

I went into IRC to report someone had ripped Alexandries Noire skin. After proving the case it remained in the libraries for several days. Finally I made a thread and it was gone in 5 minutes.
Besides...without drama , this place goes stale.

How does altering the appearance of the original oh so slightly make it okay? The whole area seems so grey or 'selective' as far as who moderates the upload. How can images of supermodels and corporate logo's get through just because they were altered or presented in a different format than the original. Example...A wall of say A.Jolie that someone downloads and transforms into a bootskin. Doesn't the copyright on an image also cover any alteration of that image for any use?
There needs to be some clarity and transparency brought to this whole issue, as even when you read the rules and guidelines, it seems kind of grey and unclear on these finer points, and as I stated earlier, the moderation sames to selective. If one mod can approve it and another delete it, it's as if the mods don't even agree on what constitutes copyright infringment.
BTW...did we ever clear up the ChaNinja issue? Did they have permission? I am curious as I have been getting emails from sites like AngryXP to get my permission to post my stuff, and it kinda makes me nervous, like I have to go check if I say NO.
Finally, DZ...I hate to see you so upset and pull out like this. You've been a great supporter of my work and a help with a lot of things for me.

boss0190 ...re the Starwars WB...it's gone, and its uploader will not be repeating his 'error'.
I still cannot stress highly enough...that email is the preferred option, otherwise the alternate method will lead to the thread's censure and then noses are out of joint because of that, instead, which is quite apparent.

Just so the methodology is abundantly clear....if [or when] you post about an alleged 'rip' publicly on the forums - expect to see the thread 'edited' or gone entirely fairly quickly.
Hopefully Wincustomize.com can have a nice new shiny "Report this as a rip" button on each upload [as DeviantArt does] so this public 'outing' won't occur.
Devart NEEDED the feature even more so than here, hence its early adoption [and thanks to Jark - who listened].
Re the emails, sometimes they may not be replied-to [real life interferes at times] but they do NOT go unread, or not acted upon....

| Can anything be done about bootskin authors autographing works that they rip from the web and convert to bootskin. |

| Yes |

So, if someone wanted to take the time and go through the boot gallery and email admin over each individual submission that is a rip (and shouldn't have been approved according to what I am seeing here) they will all be dealt with and/or deleted?

Master Apprentice Po' Smedley ...the issue raised here is with the re-signing of a wall image, not with the wall image's use in itself....see post #19 .....
I think that if the circumstances as outlined there fit then yes, as it would be a particular issue.
There are 3000-plus boots, and more logons as well...so to a degree the horse has bolted, but it would have been even more appropriate that IF the wall was another's that its source was linked AND clear credit displayed.
On occasion uploads to those sections have swamped in, raising alarm bells...and specific investigation has shown the images' origin was a site [or sites] which strictly prohibited redistribution in ANY form. They were simply removed.
However...
Wincustomize.com site policy is that the Onus is specifically upon the uploader to ascertain permissions/rights/etc for his works to be uploaded.
That is the first line of defence for propriety.
Second line is the Moderators' picking the 'issue' from the 'OK' and moderating.
Third line is all you guys....catching the strays....[such as that Starwars WB].
Most times it works a treat.
Sometimes people clutch the wrong end of the stick and all hell breaks loose...

What about something like the Davinci boot, which is an altered Microsoft Plus Theme wallpaper? Because it is altered (which seems to me they are adding/resigning their name as author) does that mean it's not a rip? Just because it's altered and has a different authors name? How is using an unaltered wall and signing your name different than altering or cutting up a copyrighted image and adding/resigning your name?
