PC Magazine has reviewed Stardock's new utility, KeepSafe.
KeepSafe is a program that provides real-time file archiving and revisioning. It makes protecting your important files and data an integregal part of the file system. Once installed, users decide which directories and files to protect and from then on, when a user (or the system) saves a change to such a file, KeepSafe automatically creates a revision and backs it up to a remote location decided by the user. Users no longer have to "remember" to back up their data nor do they have to put together system wide "timed backups" to protect this data.
PC Magazine review summarizes:
KeepSafe is devoted to protecting all versions of the files you're currently working on—a second line of defense after your full backup strategy. It does this one job with single-minded intensity and makes recovering earlier versions a snap. If you've ever saved a bad file over a good one or found your latest version corrupted, you'll appreciate the ability to get that file back just the way it was a minute or a month ago.

What....you mean save you from errors that occurred BEFORE you installed it?....
Keepsafe saves any and all changed files, obviously only once the proggy has been installed....it's not psychic...

It'd suck to lose the file I was just working on before I installed KS if it can do it.

It does.
If you open a file to edit it will save the original before saving any modificated version....

I'm not sure whether you're being difficult intentionally or what but I would tend to agree with Zubaz. I don't want to have to open EVERY file in my documents folder(s) just to get KeepSafe to make a reference copy of it. The application is only relatively useful if it only allows for protection of documents that were created/edited after it is installed. No one expects it to be psychic but it should provide a way for the user to inform it of documents it should baseline once it is installed.

The intention of Keepsafe is to save files that you ARE altering, not ones that you 'might' just happen to maybe want to do sometime in the future if/when the whim arises. For THAT you can copy *.doc [whatever] in a drive search to some CD somewhere, etc, as is good practise.
If and when you actually start altering a specific file that's when Keepsafe comes into action....creating backups as you go...

Hahahaha!! OK, I saw that but I was sure you had done it on purpose which is why I didn't point it out. Good to see that even you fall victim to the occasional typo!

The review pointed out the two limitations I saw:
No regression - it only monitors new files after install. It'd be nice if there was an option to scan for and add existing files.
Full backup, not just differences - although this is promised in a future build.
