BootSkin Plus in Beta for ODNT Subscribers ?

Sunday, February 12, 2006 by PurrBall | Discussion: Customization Software

In SDC I noticed a BootSkin Plus download link in the ODNT section.

I'm running now with no issues, although since no one else has posted this, have I gotten it in error?

Yes.
Once it is installed, it never leaves.

I wish it had a progress bar support for the hi-res skins...

Basically we had almost finished a BootSkin that allowed for high resolution/high color depth boot screens (i.e. 1280x1024 with 16.8 million colors).

But it never got finished. In the last few weeks before it was ready, Microsoft hired the lead developer. Since the whole thing was written pretty much in assembly, no one else could realistically just take it over (i.e. it wasn't feasible anyway to do that). So it sits in perpetual beta.

But none of that explains why it was temporarily available for ODNT subscribers, and then disappeared.........

I'm guessing that either Brian or Kris clicked the wrong clicky while preparing to release the preload of GalCiv2.

hm... so we'll have to wait for the next major deadline frenzy and wait for another hickup then...

I think it's just that GalCiv2 has occupied all the developer's time. Once it's all done, I'm sure we'll see some good stuff happning.

LogonStudio2 and "NeverTrust" also popped up at the same time, but I didnt have time to install them before they died.

Not really. As I said, all of the old skins work fine.

NeverTrust was obsoleted by SP2 . . so no loss.
I wonder what LogonStudio2 could do that LogonStudio can't?

More design possibilities? It's pretty restricted as it is now.

I didn't make it up!! Linky: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define:+obsoleted or http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=obsoleted

I think that WC subscribers or Stardock buyers with more than five years in the books get the pre-alpha / not-released-to_the publc builds. That's be cooler taht an outdated premium skin or two.

I would so prefer a true color Bootskin Plus over premium skins any day.

And why would we need support for alpha? A simple discalimer would do surely?

Probably because there will ALWAYS be someone out there who will ignore that and expect restitution.

If people with pirated [hacked] WB5 can come here and bitch about its failings, seeking support then it's a dead cert that it'll happen...
