Arguments, shortcuts that won't open aplications

After solving my first problems with shortcuts from OD to applications by myself, I fear I have hit rock bottom now. And I reckon it's due to my ignorance about arguments.
Is there a list of possible arguments hidden somewhere here or on the rest of the net - a Google search did not find any satisfying results for me. Any advice?
What I'm trying to do is this: I'm trying to create a shortcut to my antivirus software's updating-service. I'm using Antivir Classic 7. I have created the shortcut to OD, but the updater UI won't load once I click the icon...
Any help/advice given will be deeply appreciated!

At first, I was quite glad that, by trying your first two recommendations, it did work out for me. But after restarting my computer, it didn't work anymore... I reckon that it had worked first time round, because I'd already started the updater manually beforehand.
I also had a look at the link, and I think I got the gist of things, but it quite certainly would've been beyond me to apply my newly-gained insights.
I'm now considering writing to the company to ask...
So, thanks again - hoping not need to bother this forum too much from now on, since I hope to get it all sorted!

I assume that the update appis starting correctly, right?
Arguments are developed by the writer of the app. There is no generic set. There are things you can try though:
application.exe -?
application.exe /?
You can write the company and ask.
