Download Microsoft powertoys, Tweak UI, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx and under the desktop section you can untick the Recycle bin.

Here's one way that I've found that will remove ONLY it from the desktop.

Open Notepad and paste this into it:
--------------------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\RecycleBinOnDesktop]
"RegPath"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\HideDesktopIcons\\NewStartPanel"
"Text"="Show Recycle Bin icon on the desktop"
"Type"="checkbox"
"ValueName"="{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}"
"CheckedValue"=dword:00000000
"UncheckedValue"=dword:00000001
"DefaultValue"=dword:00000000
"HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001

---------------------------------------------

Now save that as "*.reg", ie. "hiderecyclebin.reg" and now just find the file you saved and double click on it, say yes to the registry change. Now, go to Folder Options, go to View and scroll down the the very bottom and check off the show/hide recycle bin option. It works great!!!

Yet another way (only if you have XP Pro):

Start > Run > type: gpedit.msc > press 'Enter' > expand "User Configuration" in left pane > expand "Administrative Templates" in left pane > highlight "Desktop" > double-click "Remove recycle bin from desktop" > select "Enable" > click "Apply".

Close the editor > hit "F5" to refresh the desktop and remove the recycle bin.

Replace the recycle bin by returning to the group policy editor and selecting either "Disable" or "Not Configured" (which is the default setting).

Why get rid of it? Just recycle it.

I do as in comment #1, but have a dock shortcut to the desktop folder.

Powertoys is your friend, easily trash the trash icon, plus it has some other cool features.

I've been using Tweaknow Powerpack 2006 ---> http://www.tweaknow.com/powerPack.html It's very trustworthy and does the job automatically, not only for the Recycle but for almost anything on the desktop and beyond. I think it works better than Powertoys. Good luck!
