How Do I Get IconX to Start With Windows?

IconX is not started after a reboot. I cannot find the option "Start with Windows" in the IconX Configuration Dialog. I do have DTX 3 starting with Windows, but that doesn't seem to open IconX with it.

Any pointers?

Place a copy of IconX.exe in Startup folder, C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

Thanks Cavan1. I know about the Startup folder, but since every other OD app that I have has the option in Settings to start with Windows,I thought that either I was not catching on, or maybe there's a reason why it doesn't have that.

Barring hearing from anyone else - and as you can see I'm not getting a whole lot of attention with this - I guess I'll just go ahead and throw it in the Startup folder.

I have my desktop arranged a certain way, with the icons all sized with IconX, so when it starts up without IconX they're scattered all over the place - first time I moved them around before starting IconX manually and messed it all up!

I too would like to know how to do this without using the Startup folder. If the Startup folder is used everything loads with the standard icons, and then IconX loads causing everything to clear before the IconX enabled icons load. It just looks messy.

I have yet to try loading IconX using the Registry Run. I fI get this working I will post an update.

Okay I have tried using both the Startup folder and adding IxonX to the registry. The same problem occours and IconX is not loaded until the very end which makes everthing look messy.

I remember that when I loaded DesktopX for the first time it asked me if I wanted to use IconX and I said no at the time. I wonder if that is part of the problem?

Okay! I have a fix for running IconX and having the desktop mostly set up correctly.

I really need to write a tutorial as it requires editing the registry and I wouldn't want to stuff up anyone's system.

The quick answer relates to adding an entry for the IconX exe in the registy key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Common\StartupManager

I have also found I can add CursorXP and Keyboard Launchpad and they will be started by the MCP Smartstart as well.

Note: MCP Smart Start must be set on under Stardock Central "Tools | Settings..." menu for this to work. Also you have to hunt down and remove all references to the apps, that you add under this key, from being started elsewhere. One strange thing was that I had to remove the entry for "DesktopX" itself otherwise it was started twice?!?

I will write a tutorial if I get time, but as with all Registry editimg backup and do so at your own risk.

Hope the above helps anyway. I am much happier now.

Only one last thing is how does "MCP Smart Start" start? So far I can find no reference to it in the Startup folders or the Registry...

What version are you running. I definatley don't have that on my IconX option page, and I have the latest version. My version is reported as 1.10.007 (5/08/2005) in Stardock Central.

Hey Koasati, this has been brought up before - you can run IconX and you will have an option to run at start HOWEVER if DTX is involved - once you run DTX and choose run at start, the IconX run at start up disappears and IconX won't run if DTX is run at start.

for the life of me, can't remember if it worked (no short term) and I just reformatted a week ago - so I'm starting over and don't have everything re installed yet.

I'm still thinking an umbilical didn't get fully cut in the transition from IconX being a part of DTX to being separate.

I never did the the reg option, right clicking for a new shortcut in the startup folder worked for me

beats me, I think it wasn't complete severed.

will have to take a look again once I get stuff re installed - 1st i download released, then update to newest prerelease - takes a while - (dial up)

Sir Bichur is 100% correct. Once I started having DTX start with Windows, the option disappeared from IconX - and IconX does NOT start with DTX. Weird logic, if you ask me!

I also noticed Loading DTX at start up won't let IconX load.

Also is there any way to save icon positions using iconx, after exiting any games my icons are scattered all over the place.

From my experience this option isn't visible if DesktopX is loaded as well as Icon X.

what version(s) of dtx and iconx are involved?

I might get a chance later this week to see if I still have an issue with it (finally got almost all the programs I'm thinking of using download)

The problems with having IX and DX run at startup were solved a year ago...
