No sound in Dektop Pet

My little fur ball seems to be working fine. It runs around the screen, plays with stuff, does everything it is supposed to do, but there is no sound. I'm assuming there is supposed to be sound because of the speaker icon and the ability to 'mute' from the systray context menu.
All other sound events within the WinXP sp2 OS are working correctly.
