Does brand matter?

I'm looking to upgrade the memory on my Dell laptop, but Dell doesn't sell the upgrade anymore. Does the brand of what I buy matter at all? Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, blah blah blah. Is one better than the other, so long as it fits the specs I need. They all seem to have what I need, but some are different prices than others.

There are also cheaper ones I could get, but I don't know if they are as good.

Watch BestBuy or Circuit City for deals...they always have them. I installed some Kingston sticks and smooth sailing so far...been in there for over 2 years now with no problems.

The brand of RAM shouldn't matter as long as you get the right type, and match clock speeds.

Tiger Direct and Newegg are both good places to buy from at reasonable prices. Tiger Direct is a little more rebate-oriented, though.

I buy my RAM from newegg.com.  I have bought RAM that was not a "brand" and it works great.

Kingston has been really good for me. I've used it in 4 different PCs with no problems. For generic price, it handles overclocking very well, too.

Man, I think my computer needs really specific memory because Newegg, Tiger, Best Buy, Circut City, etc. don't carry it. Cheapest I've found what I wanted was $150 for one 1GB module. I want two of those. Looks like I'll have to wait for the price to drop or shell out $300. Doesn't really seem worth it though.

1GB, PC3200, 64x64, 8K, 400MHz, 200pin. I don't know what most of that means.

Kingston is generally more expensive, but after having one 512 MB laptop stick die on me a month after warranty expired, I will never buy anything but Kingston or any lifetime warranty ram sticks.

I think the high price is due to it being 200 pin, seems less common. The same ram in the more common 184 pin is half the price.

Yeah, I noticed that. Figures that what I need is the most expensive thing out there. Just my luck. I'd go to Best Buy or something and try to lift it, but they probably don't even carry it.

I've bought memory from them twice now and have had no problems whatsoever...never did pick a particular brand, but they can walk you through and help.

I always get my stuff from Newegg , they are the cheapest prices around. Places like Best Buy and Circuit City should be torn down because of their ridiculous prices they charge on their merchandise
