Word and IconPackager

There are some fab icon sets on this site but I was wondering why so few of them seem to include an icon for a word document, which surely most of us have on our computers. Is so disappointing to apply a fab set of icons only to find that for some reason there isn't one for a .doc file. Even worse, for a reason I can't fathom, applying an icon set makes my word docs lose their standard icon and it is replaced with an ugly wordpad one.

I'm not sure of some older packages but I believe the newer IP's include a Word Doc icon and a .doc file. Is there a specific package you were referring to?

Well, have just applied the PixOffice set that comes with icon packager and no Word icon, which is bizarre for a pack with "Office" in its name.

On a related issue, anyone know where the default windows Word icon lives so that I can browse to it to replace the ugly wordpad one?

That's funny, because I seem to have lost support for Word icons myself. Happened a couple of weeks ago.

To add to Donna's response: 

Author's choice, and the older themes were focused mainly on system icons. The more advanced functions in IP v3 have set a new standard for including file type icons. The newer icon packages include a ".doc" file type icon, and artists are incouraged to include a greater number of file type icons.

This is an issue that has been going on for a while, and may be due to the default program for ".doc" files is WordPad - which is included with the Windows XP operating system.

It would seem that the "Restore all Icons" function is looking at the OS defaults as a primary, and then the installed programs if the OS does not have an association available for the file type.

I am not a coder, so do not know how one writes the "Restore" function coding, but based on behavior this seems to be the logical answer.

The current work around is to use the "Folder Options > File Types tab > select ".DOC" file > advanced button > assign the icon from the "WINWORD.EXE" file.

Hopefully this one will be fixed in future "official release" versions.

You certainly articulate that much better than I, Paul! Thank you! I've just started icon making (at least in a complete package sense) since mormegil's tutorials, so I knew I had seen a word doc icon amongst his. And the package I have been working on since, well... forever, will include a word doc icon, as well. It may take longer to complete one, but they are certainly more comprehensive than the older packs.

I'm using the latest beta of Icon Packager. Fooling around with Pix Studio I would have a icon for word documents from Icon a Day. I found if you have one of the newer packages loaded that has word document icons it will keep that icon when you switch to an older package that doesn't have one. Also if you right click on the icon you want to change and go to properties, then icon tab, then change icon, then browse it should have this in the drop down menu, C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll That is the view of the default icons, click on the one you want to change to, then OK. There may be another step like apply or something. Didn't want to mess around anymore. I'm not sure if you would have to change the icon on every word document doing this, does seem like a possibilty though.

Never mind. There isn't a word document icon on the list. Follow Corky's advice.

I assume the standard word document icon is somewhere in the Office folder in C:\program files, probably in a .dll file. Hadn't been able to find it so followed advice above and there it was.

The icon is in the Word program executible.

For OfficeXP the address is: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE"

For Office 2003, I believe the address would be: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\WINWORD.EXE"

You can see the pattern, so Office 2000 would be the same except the number in the "Office" folder name.

Note - you need to select the Word executible ("WINWORD.EXE" in the above examples) and then click "Open" to view the available icons.
