Re: Upgrading IconPackager - Clarify Proper Procedures Before I Blow Up My Machine

Wednesday, November 23, 2005 by sophiesboy | Discussion: IconPackager

I am currently working with version 3.00i[b].002

Stardock Central advises me that 3.09[b].002 is available as an upgrade.

To accomplish this do I need to perform an add/remove uninstall /reinstall procedure of IconPackager in order to get the new version to work correctly, or will simply downloading and extracting the new file upgrade me correctly?

Thanks in advance.

Using SDC is most advisable. Just highlight it, hit the upgrade button, or if when you start SDC up and it says there is an update available and you want it, click Yes. You should not have to uninstall/reinstall/add/remove through any other source than SDC. Unless you have had some other problem, that is. Hope this helps.

Actually the question arises because, at leat with WindowBlinds and all the various beta versions of WB5, I have had to uninstall/reinstall, shut down, reboot etc. ad infinitum every time an update came through.

Some people have suggested that this is because it is a beta program. I am assuming that all those "b's" in IP 3.09b[b].002 indicate that this is also a beta program. Therefore, that it also will not work correctly by simply hitting the "install" key just as all the WB5 updates did not install correctly when I hit the "install" key.

Or is this not a beta version but a new "official" release?

Sir Bichur -

Your comment made me go hunting and I think I have found part of what you were indicating -

Under Tools->Settings in Stardock Central I found the Settings->General->Archiving section where I see the "Automatically archive application before updating" function - I assume you have this selected -

However, I didn't see anything that seemed to be an "uninstall - install new" function- could you tell which one this might be?

Also, how does the archiving work? Does it allow me to recover a previous version of a program if the update doesn't seem to work correctly? How do I go about doing a recovery?

Thanks for your help

i put too much thought into the process. when it auto archives it seems to uninstall also at least that's what i seem to recall the message at the top saying. i've noticed since i auto archive, some updates that are 200-400 kb or such turn out to be in the mb range - full updated version not just updates.

yes, under 'File' is restore archive. which you can't do unless you archive. using that, if a new version (like trying out betas) craps out on you, you can restore back to an earlier working version.

Should be at bottom right... three buttons; Run, Install, Uninstall.
Also when you highlight one of programs, a button should pop up to the right, for Update, or Install.

Also, how does the archiving work? Does it allow me to recover a previous version of a program if the update doesn't seem to work correctly?

Yes.... works 'most' of the time.

How do I go about doing a recovery?

Right click program in list, and select Restore Archive.

You can also manually Archive with or without skins.

Well.
I think I just learned more in this one thread about how to make SD Central a worthwhile program than I had in the previous two weeks of ownership.

I guess this is one of the drawbacks to downloading software off the web - you don't get a nifty little book to browse through and pick up interesting (and useful) tricks of operation.

Thanks to everybody.
