Computer stops responding on shutdown...

Wednesday, November 16, 2005 by caveman23213 | Discussion: Windows XP

IN the past my computer would freeze at the the shutdown screen occasionally, but now it happens everytime i shut it down. Does anyone know how to fix this? It hangs at the "Windows is shutting down..." screen on restarts and shutdowns. I did some research on google but i still couldnt a solution.

This probably isn't relevant but for the last fews days I've had a problem with parts of AOL and MS antispyware hanging when going to standby. Slow shut down and restart. Gcasserv and woal.exe. The last time explorer was hanging too. Panicked and did a hard reboot. Just checked my MS update history and the last one was on 10 Nov. dealing with a security problem in the Graphics Rendering Engine. The last MS antispyware update was on the 17th. This could have done it. Did a repair through AOL, hope this takes care of it.

Just remembered what I was doing. The main problem was with AOL. Sometimes it would not start. But a restart would fix it. When I restarted I would get the end program popups for waol and gcasServ. First indication of something not right was a message from AOL about losing service when system went to standby. I thought it might have been from a auto update. I thought the gcas ran all the time and was confused as to why it was causing a conflict and needed to be closed to do a restart. The waol was self evident. The timing is right on the update to have caused the problem but I don't know why. And why did explorer get involved the last time I had this problem?

Majic7,

I am not sure what the issue is, but I run MS Anti-spyware (current '5779' definitions), as well as the "graphics rendering engine" update from MS........

No issue on either my desktop or notebook with both of these program/updates installed.

Have you followed yraq's advice in comment #1 yet?

My puter stops responding when I shutdown, also, but a while ago it would turn itself on again a while later

No joke, it really did.

I never ever figured out why, but I'd hear it running after shutting down completely....and as suddenly as it started doing that, it stopped.

I don't know if it was the power switch or not...but I got so tired of reshutting down, one night I switched off at the power outlet after shutting down normally...after that, no more mysterious 'doodoodoo, doodoodoo' startups.

Mysteriously came, mysteriously went
